It's a fair deal and the best one Ottawa is going to get right now which means there's a good chance they cave in and end up giving up Karlsson for less than he's actually worth.

Nylander is a very good player beside Matthews but the reality is, Karlsson has proven to be the best player at his position. Even if you don't believe the Norris' he won were warranted (even though they were), he's at worst a top 5 D in the NHL right now. Nylander will most likely never be a top 5 forward in the NHL. The Leafs would be trading from a position a strength and addressing an area of need and be giving up something they already have a lot of.

Winning the Norris isn't purely an offensive award. Defense is factored into it too. Gonchar and Green have led the league in defensive scoring and never won the Norris.

Nobody said he's the best defensively either. But he's good enough defensively and powerful enough offensively to clearly be a giant upgrade for the Leafs on the right side on the top pairing. It's either Hainsey or Karlsson. A (frank)ing jellyfish could understand that's an upgrade.

Just for the sake of comparison though...

Karlsson career averages 1.19 TGA per game and 1.40 TGF per game.

Doughty career averages 1.01 TGA per game and 1.28 TGF per game.

Both play PP and PK, career both average about 26 min a game.

But apparently, the difference between the best defensive player in the NHL and, as you claim, the worst, is 0.18 goals per game against, not even factoring in the 0.12 goals for per game difference. Overall, a 0.06 difference if you add the two together.

And let's be clear, Karlsson isn't better than Doughty. In fact, the only thing Karlsson is better than Doughty at is scoring, blocking shots and takeaways. But the point is, if you compare them, it's not nearly the "best" vs the "worst" as you claimed.

Aaaaaand that’s why you trade him. As good as he is, if the right deal was available, you’d have to consider it. What do you think you’d get for him. If Dmen are such a premium asset he’d get a bunch in return even as a ufa. Yes he makes the team better this year. Yes the Leafs D are weaker then it’s forward group. And yes he’s probably the best Dman on the team. But this team is going to go on a run for the next 7 years getting a 1st in a strong draft with a decent roster D or/and a prospect plus whatever makes the deal, could contribute on the cheap in the heart of those 7yrs. Trading him to say Chicago who may feel there window is closing and take a chance by adding some mobility to there back end. They even have the cap to sign him to. So Gards to Chicago for say their 2019 1st, 2020 2nd (condition of resigning) and Jokiharju (29th 2017). The First could easily be a 20-25 pick or a top 10 depending on how Chicago bounces back next year. And the young RHD in Joki would give the leafs a potential cheap RHD puck mover. The young core of Rielly Dermott Borgman Rosen Liljegren Sandin and Jokiharju would be solid and cheap enough in the heart of the next 7 years.

The issue is, why should the leafs offer by far the best package for karlsson? We haven't heard of anything remotely close to nylanders caliber being offered for karlsson. If we are trading for karlsson, it should start with liljegren, not nylander.
