Karlsson's next contract is going to be among the most regrettable in the league. This is even more true if he runs into a coach that forces him to be accountable in his own end. It is even more true on a good team where is offense is not needed because the forward corps doesn't completely suck.
Sure, he would be great except for the cost to acquire him and the opportunity cost to pay him for the next 8 years and the fact that he has a ton of miles on him already considering the injuries, and that he will not in any way make the Leafs better defensively.
They don't need more offense and the expense of any sort of concept of defensively responsibility. They have had plenty of that over the years. - Aetherial
He's going to demand $11+ million per year, which means the Leafs would have no room to pay so many guys what they deserve, and would require so many plugs working for League minimum.
Plus UG is suggesting we give up Nylander+Gardiner+1st, which is the greatest overpayment in NHL history. Leafs brass worked hard to build their high octane offensive team, I have no idea why anyone would want to dimish that. I'd rather sign Gardiner to half of what Karlsson is going to demand and get most of his production.

What does Joe Thornton have to do with anything?
Typical UG logic. - TrashPanda
Because the only way a player can get traded is if there are rumors about it before it happens. The NHL has actually canceled trade calls because there wasn't enough rumors about the trade before it happened.
Something, something, only if he has the mind of a child, something, something, all the reasons why he would sign with the Leafs are stupid reasons based on fantasy, something, something... but no, he never said there was no chance, only a minuscule chance, which is somehow much better and totally absolves him from being a giant tool for weeks on end insisting Tavares would sign elsewhere.
Much easier to just scroll past the trolling argumentative crap and get to the better posts. Not even worth wasting your breath in debating stupid shyte

Let me just chime in here for Uggie: any deal would be contingent upon Karlsson re-upping. - Atomic Wedgie
that would be a reasonable assumption to make if you were the GM trying to acquire him... ie. not wanting to lose a player with Nylander's upside for a FA for example.
but me thinks... that if Karlsson were willing to resign with the Sens to make this happen... it would have happened already.
that's why there hasn't been a transaction to date... .no GM is willing to give up what Ottawa is asking for FA Karlsson...
and that's why I maintain (despite Captain Broken Record's repeated blah blah blah) that the deal for Karlsson shouldn't happen from a Leaf's perspective.
I would in fact rather have Gardiner at 6M and Nylander at 6M than Karlsson at Doughty money.
just my opinion.
and I promise I won't repeat it 2342902394230 times.
Fack you guys!! now that song is in my head - Roadrunner75

Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams
The islands and bays are for sportsmen
And farther below, Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her
