In modern PP configurations there really isn't a LHD position. Just the Dman at the top.

Edler is left handed. So is Hughes. Edler's inability to have one timers and shooting lanes isn't going to be any different than Hughes. The only difference will be Hughes ability to walk the line and open up a lane with his feet, but that's not going to give him quick shooting opportunities, and Hughes isn't much of a shooter anyway.

The Canucks PP as its been with Hank as the half wall has never been meant for a LH dman at the top, but its all they have. Its why Garrison failed and Edler is frustrating.

Now with Hank gone things could change, except you have Boeser on the other side and he's not going to be your half wall QB. He's going to be your cross ice shooting threat like Stamkos, Ovechkin, etc.

So basically the Canucks PP with the current roster is never going to be a perfect fit for a LH dman.

I seem to recall a LHD named Christian Ehrhoff having some success on PP1. Also Henrik is gone now, they can plan a new PP1 around a LHD.

Stand corrected on Bo thx
I still maintain a RH threat in leftie dominant league is needed. BB on his offside is onetimer Ovechkin & Stamkosesque.
Oates & Hull
Gretzky & Kurri

As for PP Dman shooting or passing or shot/passes from the middle is important. Hughes tends to use his skating & skills to circle to the right then make a cut. The shooting & passing angles open up in a hurry.

Yes, I said that.

And they don't open as quickly as someone who doesn't have to stop the puck, rotate their hips, move their feet to get a shot off. Like someone RH'd would be working off of EP as distributor.

Look at Washington's PP.
Carlson (R)
Backstrom (L) - Oshie (R) - Ovechkin (R)
Kuznetsov (L)

Designed to run from one side. Backstrom runs the entire PP from the Henrik spot. Has Carlson for one timers high, Ovechkin for cross ice. Oshie and Kuznetsov rotate around with Oshie often in the bumper spot for a mid-ice one timer from Backstrom. Kuz as a lefty can make the back door passes to Ovechkin and dish on quick give and goes to Backstrom.

Hughes talk is better than gaunce/beagle/Erickson talk
- Codes1087

Yes it is. I am sure if nothing else Hughes will provide for some much needed offense from the backend.
I thought you might have liked the talk about sheep as well.😁

Bad hockey? More like not sexy going by the standings & late start home games for East coasters having bedtime curfews 😂
- Nighthawk

I mean based on last season’s performance. That was bad boring hockey except for some meagrely bright spots.

An ok article.

One point he missed out on was only FA is the common denominator in it all.

What was he suggesting?
Stuck with NTC/NMC’s & sign tons of UFA’s to short term but play well enough to be tradeable & we still suck & be 31st?
What were Chaput & Megna?
We played JV & McCann too early but did that push us up the standings? Of course not.

Salo would regularly skate with PP1 when healthy. Ehrhoff was fine there and worked well off Danny and Hank switching side to open up Ehrhoff's one timer, but it wasn't organic and thinking otherwise is incorrect. Most PP's aren't that dynamic and when you don't have two elite passes who were also at their physical peak that becomes difficult.

Nothing was stopping them from building a PP unit to work with a LHD. Its just not easily done because a LH-LH one timer set up kinda doesn't exist once you're in formation.

Pretty much but was not unexpected & playing hard night in night out was a good sign. Habs are champs at boring hockey.

All a very good analysis 👍👍

My turn...

Bo won’t be Hank & control the PP when i see EP in that role on the right 1/2 wall. So Hughes is on his side for support & once he gets the pass he can wheel in &/or dish to EP or BB. Collapsing D cannot guard against all 3 options.

With OV (BB) set for one-timers it opens up the middle for Oshie in our case that would be Bo. EP is our Backstrom & he can snipe better. Hughes spreads the D for assists much like Reilly. What is lacking is a set-up man for EP.

Me too. Lol.
Btw Not trying too be negative about the pick, I just don't like to get all excited about certain types of players.

- Reubenkincade

I know I like to joke about, and also be a bit sarcastic at times. Sure I was joking about Hughes being the next Bobby Orr to poke the masses here.

But after watching clips of Hughes skating abilities, his stick handling, the vision of the ice and the players, well, it really surprised me. This kid has game, I think he will project to be #1-2.

I will also go out on a limb and predict he will be the best defense man the Canucks have ever had to date.

What's that saying, when you are trying to copy someone, you are already behind .

I would rather see a unit that is creative and have their own style . Not one that is trying to copy Wash or TBs

I didn’t begin the comparison lol
I only expounded upon it.
Hughes could set-up EP for a leftie to leftie one timer.

I wondèred how long it would take before some _____, made that claim. Just because someone questions the playing style of a player, they are Don Cherry, what a ridiculous thing to say.
Btw, I can't stand Don Cherry.
Edit; because I am not a sheep and don't follow the shepherd, therefore I am Don Cherry...(frank) me.

- Reubenkincade

I get a kick out of Cherry, with his personality I’m surprised he isn’t Premier of Ontario, that province elects some screwed up people

Bo down low is nice for options.
Idk how or who can do down low right side tip in set-ups for say LE or BO or other lefties. Hughes maybe?

Because if the US shows enough interest in Canadian teams, the league might allow a team north of the border to finally win the cup.
