When do you think the Sabres’ “window” is going to be open?

They should be a playoff threat in 2019-2020 which is about where the window opens. Jack Eichel is already great and Sam Reinhart is consistent. Give Mittelstadt and Dahlin a full year to learn the NHL and let some more of the youth catch up and they will be fun. I think we’ll see a lot of glimpses of that this season, but the window opens next season.

I think there's a better chance he starts week 1, that was a hell of a promotion in such a short time from working almost exclusively with the 3's.

Didn't both of the other guys get a little banged up at practice Sunday? Could have something to do with it.

Allegedly, but they didn't miss any practice time, so it doesn't sound all that serious. Granted, it was against weak competition, but I didn't see anything in game 1 that said he shouldn't be getting more time.

One more thing about Vanek, 1/3 of his TOI is on the PP, I don't remember him killing many penalties. He has ~15800 total TOI and ~10500 EV TOI.

Jack is at ~4100 total and ~3300 EV. So like 1/5.

Edit: I (frank)ed up, there are no EV stats from before 2007, so it's missing 2 Sabres years for Vanek for EV TOI.

Vanek: ~13300 to ~10500 for a little more than Jack's 1/5, but less than a 1/4. Assuming his first two years were average PP usage.

I think it depends on the lineup around them

Even Crosby & Malkin had a string of early round exits while the Pens rebuilt the rest of the roster in between Cup victories

How quickly does Guhle progress?
How long does it take the other young defensemen to become (at least) dependable?

Is Mittelstadt a stud right away?
Does it take a couple years?
What if he tops out as just a “good” player?

Do any of the young forwards develop into top6 talents?
And do we have enough of them so the 3rd & 4th lines are producing regularly?

And then there’s the goaltending...
is Ullmark the future? Or is it Luukkonen?
Or someone else?


It might take a few years for this all to fall into place to the point where we have a decent shot at beating teams like Tampa, Pittsburgh, Washington, C bus, etc

It's been so long, but I could've sworn I remember that too, talking about it at length, until it was dead, then talked about it some more, it was badly decomposing, but still talking about it and then it was finally laid to rest, and that sounds like here, even in the "good days", maybe it was just with friends going back and forth about it, but so many of them are fair weather Sabres fans, so basically since then drafting Eichel, trading for ROR, and now Dahlin, but that's it Skinner barely registered.

But for sure I know I was trolling for some where that actually gave a poop and talked about rumors and timely notification of a trade. And I remember Bernier. Maybe I was skulking around when the Briere Drury thing happened and then came back around the deadline.

I don't know, I don't even remember what I had for dinner.

I think it’s FINALLY safe to say things are looking up for us (thank goodness)
Still got some work to do though
Okposo is the last big piece we need to move at some point imo
Which means we need at least one top6 RW
And a top4 RH defenseman as well
Hopefully Ullmark or Luukkonen are the long term answer in net for us

Beyond that,
just let all the young talent we have develop

It’ll be nice when we can all start cheering with each other again instead of the stupid arguments
