I'd rank Provorov higher than Ghost
- Scoob

Me too, but not by much. I'd have both in the 15-20 range on a list of top Dmen in the NHL.

well we cracked 100 comments yesterday...

the top 20 D, seems like reputation is a big part of it. Burns at a -16 and Werenski is good but doesnt jump off the page at you, plus he plays with Jones.

other thoughts?

Totally different players. Provorov is your all-situations defenseman who kind of excels at everything and logs huge minutes. Ghost is your dynamic game-breaking defenseman who is as deadly on the PP as any other defenseman in the league. Ghost also took huge strides last season on his defensive game.

But if I'm picking one right at this moment, it's Provorov.

Is there anyone on this list you would trade Provorov for straight up?

In a pre cap era, sure, but now, that's a tough question. Probably Seth Jones, but that's about it.

When you factor in age and cap hit, there are two:

Victor Hedman
Seth Jones

As good as EK and Doughty are, their age and cap hits don't make it worth it to me. But I'd take either Hedman or Jones straight-up.

All else being equal, no. He's younger than all above him (I think) and is only going to get better.

I was thinking Hedman myself, he is in his prime but he is 6 years older. I could see Seth Jones maybe as BiggE suggested.

Yup, Hedman's age was the only reason I didn't name him, but I'd have to think on that one a bit. He brings a size and reach element to the game that Provorov will never have and all in all, he's still pretty young. Hedman probably has at least 5 or 6 peak years left and perhaps even a few more. I think he'd be the one other guy that I'd consider trading Provorov straight up for.

Jones, IMO, is a no brainer. He's only 23, is a rh shot, is 6'4, and is dynamic in all zones. As much as I love Provorov, I'd take Jones over him without question.

Jones is only 23, he's the one I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on.

Makes sense and I would prefer to keep him and hopefully he gets signed to an 8 year deal next summer.

Why Werenski above Ghost and Provy? I know Provy is only 2 years.

I think Werenski is a bit better all around player than Ghost. When it comes to him vs Provorov, they are very similar and it could really go either way. I gave Werenski the slightest of an edge because he's a bit bigger and has a bit more reach. But you could flip them and I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

why Werenski above Ghost and even Provy? Seems he is a nice piece behind Jones.

re Defensemen: Now, if I'm building a team from scratch and can take any 6 guys to build around, my 6 would be:

Hedman
Jones
Josi
Werenski
Provorov
Dahlin

I think, between the 2, Provorov may have a bit more upside than Werenski and, due to his maniacal fitness regimen, he's a better bet to have a longer prime than pretty much anyone.

ftfy because

Thought: With Montreal in a rebuild/not rebuild no man's land, do you think Shea Weber could be offered up in the Seattle expansion draft?

great list, the only thing is I would put Ghost on it, I think he will continue to lead the league with PP points and he just does things naturally with the puck that very few can. Especially if I can surround him with your other 5.
