Mikita’s Blackhawk Scoring records may never be broken (unless rules/goalie equipment changes are made)...RIP Stan. Anyone else find it eery that he passed on NHL.com’s Hawks’ day in the 31 for 31? |

Watched him as a little kid on channel 9 WGN (yes the very few they were televised). All I could remember was Stan was silky smooth in a not so silky smooth playing style back then. He was one of the only players to wear a helmet and also his blade with black tape looked like half the size, at least height-wise, compared to today's.
SIR, RIP!

Chris Stewart for the hawks. And either Bret Gallant or Tom Sesito for the icehogs who are lacking vets and toughness - vandymeer23
Took the league by storm when he came in to the league with I believe the Blues and has been downhill since. However, he does provide the protect your teammate fear factor!
In that kind of role let a Hayden, Kunitz, or even Brouwer if brought back handle it!

Does anyone else remember the promotion they had in the 60's where if you sent in so many labels from bacon packages and a small (real small) amount of money you got a hockey stick. I believe it was a Mikita stick. I am thinking it was Rath bacon. But I could be mistaken. |

Some of the smurfs on the Hawks should watch old game films of Mikita. Stan was very smart. He could be physical. He chose his spots. They should watch closely and see him slide the butt end of his stick into an opponents ribs during board battles. They could also learn a lot about winning faceoffs, ragging the puck, and playing in front of both nets.
And yes I know the league is bigger and faster now. But if you have brains, talent and guts you can succeed in the NHL even if you are small. |

NHL network for their Raise the Cup program had the Pens beating the Hawks in 92' tonight while Stosh's stats scrawled underneath...
let's not forget either that Mikita played 22 seasons in the Indian Head and was a true innovator for the game - the curved stick and one of the first players to wear a helmet.
This is a great article by Chris Kuc then of the Trib regarding his health situation as the Hawks were about to beat the Bolts for the Cup in 2015...my heart goes out to Jane and Jill Mikita and hoping they are finding some peace right now...

Huh. . .Mikita only weighed 160 lbs?

He may have weighed slightly more. It was a 160+ lbs of granite. He was one tough SOB. On the ice.
I had the pleasure of meeting Stosh long after his playing days ended. He was kind, humble and witty. One of the game's greatest thanked me for remembering him. Its rare when you get to meet one of your childhood sports heroes and he turns out to be even nicer than you hoped. |

That's right PDX...5'9" 165 soaking wet and whoa the penalty minutes...but after his daughter didn't like seeing him in the box he changed his game and won 2 Lady Byng's...BTW Mikita still the only player to win the Art Ross, Hart and Lady Byng in the same season... |

He preceded my watching hockey by a long time, but it sounds like he was an incredibly kind and generous human being. |

He is one of only 9 players to win the Ross and Hart in the same season multiple times.

He was notorious for skating right off the ice if the Hawks were knocked out of the playoffs.
If you ever happen to come across the highlights of the 71 Cup loss to Montreal, , as the game ends and the Habs start to celebrate, you can see Mikita heading to the locker room gate. lol |

It was Colorado where he got his start.
Stewart is another example of a guy where people's perception of him is stuck in the past. He was a good power forward, 64 point sophomore season when he was 23 and everything, but he peaked at 25, and it's been downhill steadily ever since. Hasn't gotten more than 26 points in his last 5 seasons, only 1 goal in the last 3 playoffs he's been apart of, plays against only low quality of comp the last 3 years, and doesn't contribute to special teams (not defensively good enough to PK and not offensively capable anyone to be on a PP just even as a screen). And he's averaged about a hit a game or less the last 3 seasons because he's too slow now to hit anyone.
25 or younger Chris Stewart, sure, sign me up! About to turn 31 Chris Stewart is pretty garbage at everything hockey related so no thank you with a pinch of hell no. |

No worries. Always enjoy a healthy or in this case mostly unhealthy food discussion. Poutine was a reference to what William Nylander might eat living in Canada...though I realize poutine and smoked meat sandwiches are more regionally appropriate for Montreal and Quebec.
Also, just not a deep dish fan. When I get pizza I like to eat more than a piece or two.
Also, RIP Stan. Along with Pit Martin was my favorite player as a kid. - HawkintheD
To be fair- you can't get any of that stuff here - yeh I guess one of the ice rinks with a bar/grill here you can -but --- doubt I want to trying playing even rec league on that diet ... I'm just way too old. I could have sworn the post I saw was from an Australian -- it sounds like you are saying you'd been quoted -and naturally I may have missed it.

Bang on. Unless there is a replacement or more help at centre that is acquired, AA shouldn't be going anywhere.
Best case scenario is he plays really well and os healthy all year so it A) helps this team win games first-and-foremost and B) ups his trade value for trade deadline or next offseason. - Justin Lowe
I know AA is a big body and goes to net but my thinking is this is a silent rebuild and he is slow ,think the team needs speed , develop a younger player and clear cap space for future. He does produce , I agree.
If he stays on team this season hope they put some speed with him.
I look at roster and see 2 scoring lines and 2 4th lines? I would like to see a 3rd or a 4th line with lots of speed puts Defenses on their heels. Thanks Justin! |

He struggled to keep weight on during the season. One of the reasons he played as long as he did was he felt the hawks didn't have anyone to take his place. That changed when Savard showed up. He felt a bit better about retirement after that. |

Really sadden to hear that Stosh has passed. Heard the news when I got into the car for the drive home from work this afternoon.
Bob Verdi - legendary Hawks columnist for the Trib - and now Hawks team historian was on the Score.
Here's Verdi's article from the Hawks website.

RIP sir - DK002
The media outlets will give you all the obvious bullpoop, but Verdi was there the whole time. If you are a hawks fan you need to read the article. And even if you're not. Incredible piece of journalism. |
