As the host of the next draft, the Canucks are likely thinking of different strategies to make sure they can select Jack Hughes as the top pick to go along with brother Quinn. Huge splash in Vancouver next June.

Isn't there a third brother, too? If so, he doesn't seem to have much fan fare.

I think I may have an angle as to the style and/or objective of how Quinn H plays. He is talented skating that he begs a forechecker to commit, then he beats him with the combo of edges and hands. Now it is a 5 on 4 but Quinn H passes the puck and goes making him a primary option get the puck back (potential give N' go). Now in the O zone rather easily with numbers and options. Quinn H looks for the "tough" passes ala Gretsky's eyes and foregoes the easy direct pass. He is very good on his backhand. However, he still really didn't get challenge in the D zone. I saw a Canadian winger had him beat to the outside but Quinn fought through with a poke-checked (thanks to his wheels) the puck away down low. At the Big Show that same play, a power forward beats him and goes directly to the net and not cut off. But you are all right, Quinn H is an amazing talent.

As for Jack, this is my first time seeing him in extended live play. I was expecting more but probably because of the hype. I also have to remember Jack is at least a year younger which makes a big difference at this age. FYI, I did not see much with Walstrom. He wasn't of the top line. Brady T was a man among boys and easily the best player on the ice from the amount i saw.

Please no. The nuck fans are insufferable when they think they have something to crow about.

How about the Hawks win the lottery and select Jack Hughes and make a trade with Vancouver to acquire Quinn. Ha ... how about that.

Haha! And the Hawks will up give Keith, Seabs, and a draft choice for Quinn. The youth movement will clearly be on! LOL!

https://www.prosportstran...raftTrades/Years/1999.htm

Here's an illustrated and summarized version of the 1999 draft and how the Canucks landed the #2 pick to go along with their original #3 pick so they could draft the Sedins.

Totally forgot the Hawks were involved in that convoluted multi-team mix of trades. The Hawks originally had the #4 pick but traded it to the Canucks for Bryan McCabe and a future 1st round pick who ended up being the "Unibrow" Pavel Vorobiev. The Rangers ultimately got the #4 pick and drafted Pavel Brendl.

This year was when the Hawks drafted Steve McCarthy in the 1st round which they got this pick in the Chris Chelios trade with the Wings.

Also, the Hawks made that blockbuster deal to land fan favorite Boris Mironov along with Dean McAmmond and a few other forgettable assets for Ethan Moreau, Dan Cleary, Chad Kilger, Christian LaFlamme, and more forgettable assets.

Another trade related to this draft was with the Ducks to land Josef Marha.

The Hawks drafted Michael Leighton in this draft, too.

Overall, the 1st round of the 1999 draft was pretty crappy. Besides the Sedins, the only other notable players were Martin Havlat and Barrett Jackman. Hawk Stanley Cup champion Nick Boynton was a 1st rounder that year by the Bruins.

This is what they mean when they say this is the last time you see these uber talented players before they get to the pros and the wild horse is coached out of them.

Structure can be broken down easily at times in jrs and as we know not so much the higher you go in pro.

Well if Boqvist can score over 50 points in a season at NHL level that ain't too bad?
- MjulQvist

No not bad but I'm greedy. A 50ish point Dman that is smallish and weak in his zone isn't that uncommon and will become less so the way the league is going.

As mentioned before I'm hoping for a lot more out of the 8th overall but if the Svede's floor is 50 points and can run a top of the league PP that isn't too bad.

Now a Dobson type at 50 points with size, runs a PP and takes the toughest competition in his zone is real nice.

The Sedins said they weren't coming across the pond unless they played on the same team. Vancouver had the higher pick. So I think Burke, who had strong ties with the league, had the NHL lean on the hawks to work something out. `

Entwhistle will be in Hamilton (OHL) again this year. I will be able to see him live a couple times this year.

I'm very jealous of you guys that are close to a CHL club and can see it live. Remind me Justin what club are you close to in the great great great country of Canada?

Bear, you've read my posts for a few yrs now. If I post something at 8:00 AM I might forget that info and mangle it in a post at 6:00 PM that same day. ...... Now I know what the old men at work were talking about 30 yrs ago when they told me they saw me on tv last night. The egg frying in a pan with a voice over saying "a mind is a terrible thing to waste"!
..... As the song goes, Sad But True.

My long winded way of saying I don't remember where I read that but it made good sense to me. I can easily see Bovqist being a Tyson Barrie. Lotta similarities.

- Mr Ricochet

All good, got a chuckle out of it, reminded me of something I would've typed.

My advice is for everyone to not worry about the 17 yr old at this point. I would just challenge anyone to say they saw a young player at 17, and I predicted his career would turn out as "X", and I was exactly correct.

Except for maybe Wiz and a few exceptions, I doubt it.

No one knows what's in these kids minds and hearts and how they grow develop/work.

Lets see how it goes say by end of year two in London, I think we'll have a better idea at that point. He'll only be 19/20 at that point, and ready or not.

I’m calling Kahun as the breakout player this year.
- EnzoD

A more dynamic player than I had envisioned. He's listed as a C/LW, anyone know if he's a natural C and if he projects as a C at the NHL level? Hard to tell from the video but he seems high much of the time in the Ozone which usually means he's playing C.

That's why I've learned to defer to the paid scouts but of course they were the ones recommending Barker at 3rd(?) overall.

I guess the point is the Hawks can't miss on the 8th overall and Hawk fans need the Svede to develop into a player worthy of that pick.

The hope is his path is London this yr followed by as many yrs as needed at Rockford. The Svede in London will be fun to track under Hunter as coach and probably with Bouchard stuck another yr there too due to CHL/NHL Indentured Servitude Clause. Kid will have everything needed to develop this yr.

As far as predicting what a 17 yr old will look like as a 23-25-30 yr old that's what these NHL people get paid to do. Some hit some miss but man you just can't miss at the 8 slot especially when you only get into the top 10 once a decade.

I was only able to catch half the 1st period of the Sweden/Finland game last night and did not see Boqvist (#3) on the ice. Did he not play in that game? I saw the entire Sweden/Canada game Friday and while I thought the entire Swedish team looked pretty bad, especially the d-men - I thought Boqvist and his d-partner Ginning were the two best d-men on the Swedish team ... so if he didn't play against the Finns last night I have to question why.

Ya wasn't sure, but you are probably right. Hawks probably want him one year in London and then to Rockford, but, can he go to Rockford after London at 18?

I'm not going to try and understand all that, but its nuts. No other sport works that way, and it should be changed. Should be like Baseball, you go where the team wants you to, and you move up through the system >Indy>Rockford>Chicago as the team feels you should.

You are right, have to hit on that 8th pick. I'll just say, some of the knocks on the other bigger Dmen in the draft was their skating. I know you can learn to skate better, but in the now and future NHL, skating is a must. I would always lean towards the better skater, especially one that shows good instincts. But it is a bit a crap shoot, even at 8.

How'd you like to be a Habs fan and have been picking 3rd??

Think they got the next Toews?

There are many that have a better handle on jrs than I but as I understand it is Major Junior would suffer greatly at the gate if kids drafted out of the OHL, WHL and QMJHL (CHL) were allowed to leave and play in the AHL at 18 and 19 yrs old.

With the CHL being the #1 feeder of the NHL the NHL understands the importance of the 60 team CHL staying solvent. That was the impetus, the viability/solvency of the CHL, of the NHL/CHL agreement that all 18-19 yr olds not making an NHL roster being bound to their CHL club until 20 yrs old...... I snarkily call that agreement The Indentured Servitude Clause cuz it is very much like it. As an adult you are bound to x amount of yrs of service before you are free.

That as I understand it is the reason for the funk, and confusion for a fan, about who can leave a CHL team to play AHL and when.

But that rule only applies to kids drafted out of the CHL and cuz Bovqist was drafted out of Svedish jrs he and the Hawks are not bound to any league this coming yr. He can play AHL this yr if they thought he was ready but smartly chose the OHL.

This is where the confusion still surrounds Joki. He was drafted out of the WHL but was on LOAN from his Finnish club so the Hawks' argument is he was not property of his WHL club but his Finnish club and therefore not bound by the NHL/CHL agreement.

As far as MTL and Kotkaniemi I'm a fan (Wiz opened my eyes to this kid). Kid showed his wares vs men and was excellent. It would seem his floor is a legit 2 way NHL C and ceiling a 1st liner. Probably one of the safer picks along with all world Dahlin and IMO Tkachuk. I high floor.

I think that would have been 3 in 3 or at least 3 in 4 for the diminutive Bovqist, ebony. Think he was just a heathy scratch but can't find a box or recap on that tilt.

100% in agreement here! Skating, skating, and more skating! You want proof just look at Kuznetszov in the pro's and Quinn Hughes in college. They both can get out of trouble due to their edges and burst but also manufacture/create due to those same qualities. They are both effortless yet efficient skaters. Boqvist is a good skater not to that of Q Hughes, but few are. Also I do not want to get into a comparison because it would lead to "What Ifs?"

On a side note, saw a bit of Bouchard (Canada vs Sweden) and he did not look good in defending on rushes. Of course, poor footwork led to bad transitions which led to getting beat.
