Thought you did, in an earlier post. Must have been a misread.

To summarize, what I said is if Morin turns out to only amount to a 3rd pair NHL defenseman, I would not consider him a bust. I do agree that more is expected from a player drafted that highly.

Wasn’t referring to any particular player. I’m still VERY high on Sam! Jury is still out on him. Way too early to judge the big man. Big Dmen develop much slower, and he lost a year, plus part of this one. Timeline for Forwards and D is very different. Each case stands on its own.👍
- Hokeeguy9

Yeah, I am rooting for Sammy. Would have been up when AMac went down. Hell, Alt AND O'Neil both played in St. Louis last year. No telling where he would be if he was healthy last year.
The other thing to consider is the quality of the draft the player is taken in. #11 picks vary from year to year. So much is subjective in these situations.

A bust is not becoming a regular NHL player.

I agree. Bust is strong language, and should be reserved for such

BigE, I don't think your value thing is that simple. 3rd pair on set of Dman? For example, Alt and O'Neil are NHL's then I say Morin could have been a top four last year on some team. Think how thin we were at D if DeZotto was out #1.

I would counter and say if Morin is a great 3rd pair D and plays great as a PK specialist then they are looking pretty good on value. If he is behind some players that are great players then that matters. If the flyers have a 1, 2,2,3,4,4 playing as their top six. You are still getting value. How many minutes does he eat up. What kind of things does he add that the team needs.

Just don't think it is that simple. At least in my simple mind.

I'm so confused. Cesar Hernandez is being interviewed post game and has a translator translating the questions to him but he's answering the questions himself in pretty strong English.

Crazy cool that all our USA prospects scored goals. Let alone scoring all four goals for the team.

It is just great that JOB got two goals after he was scratched the last game.

This is just good experience for all the Flyer prospects. Hope they make the final rosters for the Jr worlds.

Good for Cesar that he can do that, but I never judge athletes who need a translator.

My counter to the bust argument is Nail Yakupov. Guy has been an every day NHL player but never put up more than 33 points in a season. As a 1st overall pick he's gotta be considered a bust I would think, no?

But yeah, if Morin turns into a 3rd pair guy I'm not really considering him a bust. Most of the players taken around him in that draft haven't exactly been lighting it up either.

Oh not judging at all. I've just never seen anything like that. I speak a bit of Italian but understanding it and speaking it always grew hand in hand for me,. It was surprising how well he could answer questions in English with needing a translator to translate the questions.

And now he’s out of the league when he should be in his prime. He’s a bust now when there was a flicker of hope before

Oh, poop, didn't mean to get judgy with that answer. I'm sorry.

I just have sympathy for athletes who struggle with the language thing. I'm happy when organizations offer help and support for it!

Since we've been chatting about draft busts, here are my top 10 biggest 1st round busts in Flyers history:

10. Mark Suzor D 1976 #17
Suzor played all of 64 NHL games in his forgettable NHL career and I can't remember a single one. Still on the board at 17 were guys like Brian Sutter and Randy Carlyle.

9. Larry Wright C 1971 #8
106 games and a whopping 12 points for this offensive dynamo. Still on the board at 8 were Steve Vickers, Terry O'Reilly, Craig Ramsay and, FFS, Larry Robinson. Oh well.

8. Jason Bowen LW/D 1992 #15
The first contestant from 92, Bowen played 77 games in the NHL. Still on the board at 15 were Jason Smith and Martin Straka.

7. Glen Seabrooke LW 1985 #21
Seabrooke is best remembered for winning a lawsuit against the Flyers medical staff. Lord knows, no one remembers his 19 career games and 7 career points. Available at 21 that spring were Joe Nieuwendyk and local kid Mike Richter.

6. Mike Stothers D 1980 #21
Stothers played, and not very well, all of 30 games in the NHL and piled up an astounding 2 assists. Available at 21 if you wanted D, were Ric Nattress and Craig Muni.

5. Steve Smith D 1981 #16
Yeah, another stud Dman. Smith played a totally forgettable 18 games in the NHL. Probably would have been better off, if they really wanted a dman, taking some kid named Chris Chelios.

4. Maxime Oulette G 1999 #22
Oulette is exhibit A for not taking a goalie in the 1st round. He played 12 NHL games and I can't remember any of them...thankfully. Still on the board at 22 were P.O.S. Martin Havlat and Jordan Leopold.

3. Dan Lucas RW 1978 #14
Lucas played 6 games and actually scored 1 goal in the NHL. Good for him. At 14, we could of had Al Secord, Don Maloney or Tony McKegney.

2. Ryan Sittler LW 1992 #7
And once again we return to the horror that was the 1992 draft. Sittler's career was derailed by injuries, but whatever the reason, when you are picked 7th overall and never play a single NHL game, that's not good. Available at #7 that year was Sergei Gonchar.

and at the top....

1. Bob Currier C 1969 #6
Yup, this is the stiff they actual picked before Bobby Clarke. Currier was big...and that's pretty much it. He had less heart than the Tin Man and was sorely lacking in the nuts dept as well. Currier never played a single NHL game. Besides Clarke, still on the board at 6 were center Ivan Boldirev who played over 1000 NHL games and put up over 800 points and future Flyer Dman, Andre "Moose" Dupont.

Farabee was good. Very strong on the puck, good two way ability, strong on the boards. He's got skill, too. Sneaky type skill, kinda like Couts. A quick pass here, or a smart shake there, etc. Game looks very polished. He's a perfect candidate to play with high level talent. Super smart. Scored on a 2v1 pass.

JOB plays with a lot of energy. He had a hell of a shot on his first goal. Came down, 2-1 on the left side (as a RH shot), opened up to pass and fired a wrister short side. Very good looking goal. Second goal was a rebound. He crashed the net at the right time. Very noticeable last night. High energy.

Cates had caught my eye from the first game. He's good, very good. Scored a very silky between the legs goal. A lot of poise displayed to score that goal. Looked good on the PK.

Frost went okay. He's a quietly good, high iq player. Honestly, these games didn't really change any of my opinions on Frost.

I've read Lycksell and Ginning played as well, but I didn't see that one yet. I have it recorded, will watch it later. Ginning scored a goal.

Yeah, I mean a saw the replay, but I haven't seen the whole game.

Cates was great! First viewing of him, looked amazing.

Ginning was decent. Plays a strong defensive game, can skate okay for a big man, choppy hands, tho. Still, I was happy with what I saw by him.
