My whole point is a player with the most skill or better skillset doesn't always win the role or is the best for the role.

On a few different levels. Weise wasn't this bad in previous destinations. The length of the contract was always a head scratcher. But even more so has been Weise's total lack of pride in his game.
- MBFlyerfan

This! he played most of last year (when he played), as a man content that he would have enough money to never have to work again. There was no intensity or passion in his play.

That improved in the last handful of games, but it has left a seriously bad taste in the mouth of many. Had he been Montreal Weise I think everyone would have been fine with the contract.

Linus Hogberg (5th round pick at 6’1” and 180) is a little light but a pretty good skater as reported. This kid is already putting in time with the SHL and was selected on the Swedish World team (7th D man). He maybe the closest the NHL outside of the above mentioned and Friedman IMO. Hogberg most likely won’t sniff the NHL for a few more years. Staying in SHL next year at least.

Ok, still confused why you stated it was a bad example. I could always use a Weal/Laughton example. Some say Weal has a better skillset than Laughton, if that is the case shouldn't he win the 3C spot?

Your example is not a bad one, I can understand why you thought I was saying that. Poorly worded on my part. I was referring to the other poster and using that Vandevelde wasn't signed by another team.

Bill who has more potential in your opinion Casey
Mittelstadt Or Nolan Patrick ? Who will end up the more productive player ?

Not to my knowledge. The Flyers were always a cap team that always tried to win by spending up to the cap. If the Flyers develop as a team like we all hope, they will be a cap team again in the near future.
- MJL

well perhaps but the whole point to drafting and developing is to have cheaper, but talented options.

I think NoPa may turn into the overall better player (better defensively, able to be used on more situations, etc) but Casey may be the better point getter. They're very different types of players

Teams that win tend to have cost effective players that produce above their expectations.

Of course but as a team gets better, they draft later, deal draft picks etc. which makes it harder to continue that. At some point the Flyers will likely shift somewhat.

Will Frost & Ratcliffe be playing tonight? I am looking forward to seeing Ratcliffe play. I think he will be the biggest sleeper from that draft class.

The amount of good Hextall has done for this franchise only makes the Weise signing more confusing.

I think what you are alluding to is that player evaluation is different for each person/organization. We know the Flyers aren't always right either.

In the case of VDV I think most would agree that the most frustrating part was the fact that he never came out of the lineup when logical arguments that other players were better could easily be made. Not sure I buy "all teams have those guys" as a good enough reason for not being bothered by that.

*one other note on the whole VDV thing I find hilarious is that not only did he not make the Ottawa Senators team, but 27 different forwards played for them last year Turns out it is pretty easy to replace bad players

I am interested to see where Rick Nash signs. I know there were rumors he might not sign at all

If they hit on 5-6 of their current prospects they are going to have a tough time in 3-4 years figuring out the top 9 skaters.

Never said I wasn't bothered having VDV in the lineup for those years, but every coach and organization makes decisions that will have a fan scratching their heads, it is not just the Flyers.

Stanley Cup champs re-signed Brooks Orpik, just saying.

As a longshot,
I think Myers makes club outta camp and he and Sanheim go on to be a solid pair that can slot into any circumstance.

Hopefully not too dramatic of a shift. The scouting department has done stellar work in finding players later in the draft. Even late in the first round.

Hopefully they are able to keep the pipeline stocked and judiciously sign that "missing piece" when it comes to be that time.

Im hoping to see a Red Wings type run of success but with better drafting. People talk about the Red Wings hitting on late round picks such as Zetterberg and Datsyuk and use that as proof of their drafting prowess and success. But when you look at who else they drafted those same years for example, they may have just been lucky.

Personally I think the Flyers drafting over the past 6 seasons has been stellar.

Can anyone explain to me why others seem to think the Flyers are in the Buffalo range of teams in the NHL. I would love to hear your take Bill.

"4. Couturier - here's the love for the Flyers - he's the most well-rounded centre in the east and takes all the toughs and is paid a fraction of his value. Why are the Flyers still so lame then?" - Peter Tessier

I know the season was disappointing to most Flyer fans, especially the oust in the 1st round and they are far from a powerhouse team, but really?

3rd in the division in a pretty tough Metro, a season most other teams would call a success and the Flyers are still lame?
