Funny thing - not long after reading your comment, I was surfing the web, and came across a Sporting News article which rated all NHL teams prospect pools. The Wings were rated 10th best and the Habs were rated 18th best. The Wings are probably 2 years or more ahead of Montreal in rebuilding, and will win another cup long before the Habs do.

Well, I guess we could argue about Nyquist / Patches relative value, and maybe Patches would be an improvement for the next 2 years or so. But the Wings will not challenge for any championships during that time - we need a total retool on defense, and only have Cholowski, Hronek, and Hicketts who could help in the next 3 years. In the mean time, I'm not giving up any high draft choices to get a player like Patches who won't be contributing much any more by the time the Wings will be ready to compete for another cup. Maybe as part of a deal for a mid twenties top 4 defenseman, but not for a guy who makes you marginally better for a few seasons, but is not part of the solution to get back to the cup finals.
