This makes zero sense. Both teams aren't going to make the playoffs this year and need/are in rebuilding mode. Why would Detroit trade for Patches only to see him walk for nothing at the end of the season. And why would Montreal take on the bloated contract of Helm just to acquire Nyquist?

Detroit seems to have committed to a rebuild. Montreal has not. The Wings would rid themselves of a bad contract and acquire a good deadline trade piece. The Habs would just get (frank)ed. Maybe this is a realistic roomer after all.

Actually both are listed as centers on nhlpa.com. Nyquist hasn’t played at center that I can recall (he has been playing on lines with other C’s) but Helm has.

As long as it’s not a 1st round pick this would actually be a good move for Holland—- so doubt it happens

Absolutely no way it's a 1st, even if lottery protected. No way, that is an overpay.

For the wings, this would simply be paying Montreal a potential high draft pick to take Helms contract. NyQuist is a year younger than Patches with a similar salary. Montreal I thought has shown interest in NyQuist before, so maybe they plan to re-sign him after next season at potentially a lower price than what he is making now if they can. I think a good move for both teams if remotely true.

Detroit isn't going to make such a risky trade as this rumour. They are years away from contention and Pacioretty will not be interested in re-signing there.

Pacioretty will end up with the Panthers for a 1st rounder and a prospect. The only thing holding it up is that the Panthers will want to be sure they are at least close to a playoff spot. I doubt the Panthers will give him the contract he wants though, so Pacioretty will end up as a rental. He will then sign with the Islanders next summer, to the tune of 7 years/6.5 - 7 mil AAV.
