What does he need to do for him to be successful, in your eyes? Is it about goals/assists. Does he need to be harder to play against? Two way game? Or does he need to live up to his draft position?
- 1970vintage

He needs to play harder, be more consistent shift after shift, I would like a tougher presence like Bertuzzi played with.

I'm not like some here that use hindsight to rag on a player that may have been drafted to early.

The kids got great speed and size, has a great shot when he uses it with confidence, and I think the goals and points will come if he can put the complete package together.

The blame I put on Linden was sticking around as long as he did, the first time he was told no by FA he should have been out the door.
- A_SteamingLombardi

Yes I agree with this, maybe he was hoping FA would see the light.

But then again I run a department that I have been told many times the I can run it my way with no interference. Well that is BS, and just this morning I have been overruled but I need a couple more years before I can say pound salt.

2 no one knows what Guerin does in Pittsburgh. People need to stop giving former players cred because they are former players.

Theo Epstein couldn't hit a home run in a 100ft park. But the way he runs a franchise is a lot better than the way Derek Jeter does.

As a manager, he has varied experience at multiple positions in a successful franchise, that is shown by his resume. Remember i am saying as a replacement for Linden, not Benning. He does have experience in management and has been given added duties. The ex player part is neither a plus or minus in terms of his qualifications.Hunter might well be another that could be included in the argument. There is a lot of disagreement on his involvement in the Leafs build , but his resume is substantial. As a replacement for the President, not the GM i think he would be a qualified candidate as well.

People need to stop with the Bertuzzi comparison. Bert was a legitimately big dude who had a mean streak to balance out his floating.

Jake's an average sized dude with wheels. He's a c-hair bigger than Horvat.

Bertuzzi’s puck handling was also miles better, people who make that comparison aren’t paying attention.

Maybe Ferraros right a bigger Jannik Hansen with hopefully a better shot will be his top end. If he develops a work ethic like Hansen and is forgiven his draft position then he wont be a bad bottom 6 player in future.

I made the comparison to how Bertuzzi played the game at that position, I would like to see Virtanen adopt that style of play. Hard to play against, and the kid is strong he hits a player properly, he can hurt them.

Which is even more impressive because he was 6'3"

And Bert was good at playing hard and dirty when he wanted to. Jake doesn't seem to mind throwing a hit, but once he has someone get in his face he wilts.

not many guys adjust their playing style drastically until it becomes a "i have to stay in the league and hit and block shots. (frank) scoring" point of their career.

See above, do you remember when Bertuzzi was drafted, do you also remember how many years it took Bertuzzi to become the player he was...years and Virtanen is on that same trajectory path, how's that for a comparison

Quite bizarre to hear the whole saga come full circle and that TL really knew we were going to be bad and build slow. Ive said it before: we need to do what the Ottawa fans did and create a out with Aquaman non-profit. Stir up some poop and print lots of media about how he just wants to profit and isn't willing to build a contender.

Pat LaFontaine did just that in Buffalo, he told Pegula if he wants to run the team you don't need me....bye!

for one Bertuzzi there are like 10 Brad Isbisters and 10 Kyle Cliffords and 10 Lawson Crouses
