This whole entire series of RW's blogs has been leading up to his glorious culmination in the biggest JMFJ bashing in history...at least since Barry left. |

Agreed. Not one person besides DDK himself thought that was a good contract the day it was signed. |

The commentary on Girardi is pretty silly. The fact that Girardi is just not a very good defenseman anymore is a really bad reason to say that he is "overrated." To say that Girardi is overrated would mean that a majority of the people that follow hockey would believe he is a good player, when he definitely isn't. Girardi is neither overrated or underrated. He is just simply a below-average defenseman, at this point. I don't think that there are many people out there that think otherwise.
And blaming Girardi for the slip in McDonagh's play is pretty lazy. McDonagh hasn't been the same player since maybe 2015. And he has played with plenty of other guys besides Girardi. It helps if you've really followed the Rangers - but McD's injuries have definitely taken their toll.
In fact, McDonagh makes much more sense as an "overrated" option on Tampa's roster than Girardi. At least right now. I actually hope that he bounces back to his legit All-Star form. |

Agreed 100%.
These lists are more "fairly well known hockey players that are overpaid," as opposed to overrated ones. |

Zaitsev is not overrated. He was one of the worst players on the team last year and everyone knows is. He is rated right where he should be. |

Exactly. You wouldn't say for example, Lucic is overrated. He's just overpaid and he sucks |

Agreed. Gardiner would get my vote for Leafs overrated, mostly because of how much the stats community loves this guy, and how he makes those who watch 82+ games pull our hair out over him. Would definitely benefit from different usage. |

This. 100%.
Sure, Girardi was a ball and chain on McDonagh when they played together. But McD did have other partners during his tenure in NY. Having said that, I do feel bad for McD when Girardi came to Tampa. He must have thought to himself - "Jesus, not again. I can't get away from that guy!"
Girardi has no business being slotted in as anything higher than a 7th D-man. He blocks shots. That's it. That's all he can do at this point in his career. Nobody doubts his heart or ethic. But his skillset is a dumpster fire and he shouldn't be getting top-4 minutes on any team in this league. I would give Koekkoek a full look before dressing Girardi.

You nailed it with this list, man. Really well thought out selections
Ristolainen - all I can say is “amen”. Dude is awful
Ekblad - career trajectory reminiscent of Phaneuf. As a rookie, it looked like he was poised to rake in multiple Norris trophies. Now, he’s rarely mentioned among the best 20 or 30 dmen in the league
Zaitsev was a bargain in his first year, and then took a step back last season. Fingers crossed he can regain his old form - AxlRose91
Guess you didn't actually read his explanation for why he included Risto is on this list...which I think is a fair assessment.
I'll paraphrase for you, he doesn't believe it's a fair description, even though the bandwagon folks that probably don't watch much of his actual play like to proclaim, but rather that his play has been more the result of an atrocious D corps around him which has resulted in him playing more minutes and against more veteran talent than should be asked of a still green/young D man |
|
|
|
you are an idiot, risto is definitely a top 4 denfenseman, his minutes just need to be managed better - warsawkid
Risto has to show us before we can say this. It will help that we have more help on the D now. Also, we hope our new goaltender is able to stop a beach ball in a shoot out. |

Zaitzev was hurt for a large portion of the start of last season, so it seemed he was a step behind everyone else much of the time. He might still be overrated but he will have a much better year than last season. |

It’s harder to find a Red Wing that isn’t overrated. Abdelkader is one of the most overrated players to ever play. Daley got that contract because of his 2 cups. Green is meh, Helm, Glendenning, Howard, Ericsson, Bernier, Nielsen, Jensen, Witkowski, all overpaid plugs. |

And now, what everyone has been waiting for................
The Jerry award goes to...............Dave Tallon for kicking that bum Gerard Gallant to the kerb - literally. Gallant had no place being in the head coaching job & Tallon recognised that & moved to right the wrong. Results have now supported Tallons actions & history will be on Tallons side.........oh.
And,
The George Costanza goes to................yes, that's right, you all guessed it - Ray Shero for the Larsson/Hall trade. It was an unbelievable effort that has had the judges wetting themselves. An honourable mention goes to Steve Yzerman for the Serg/Drouin trade, but Ray just keeps getting the accolades he so rightly deserves. |

I remember having a discussion about Ekblad in his 2nd year. The comment was Ekblad was already a number 1 Dman, & analytics supported that. I replied by saying I'd like to see another year or 2. Then he got injured, & injured again. So maybe his playing style needed changing (a little like Tanger), & Ekblad hasn't been able to do what naturally comes to him.
So does injury have anything to do with players regression, especially multiple injuries in short time. I wouldn't say a player was overrated if injuries have (frank)ed him up.
That said, Tanger is probably the most overrated player based on his past year or 2 - even though I'm sure there's analytics that say otherwise. Analytics don't show players decisions all that well.
I'll hold this question until Xmas, as I hope Tanger has a great start (&finish) to the season. But is Tanger worth $8m, or, would a team pay him $8m if he hit FA now? |
