They're significantly more proven options who at the same age as Sparks and Pickard were already starters in the NHL. As bad as they may seem, they've proven to be better than who the Leafs have.
They're likely just looking for a contract, period. 1 year deal at 1 or 2 million would hardly be a risk financially and Pickard would likely clear waivers and could be the Marlies starter if all else failed.
But again, Sparks being good in the AHL doesn't prove he's good for 25-30 solid starts in the NHL. If he was really that good, wouldn't he have stolen the back-up job last year? How much did he really improve? - Unholy_Goalie
1 year is a pretty long time in terms of development. Especially considering they won the championship. Kapanen and Johnsson weren't ready at the beginning of last year but they will be this year, Sparks is in the same boat. Sure they got some games in but I'd imagine if Andersen and Mac got injured or faltered, Sparks would have been able to come in and do a decent job.
Eventually they have to give him a legit chance to grab the job, this is the year. If he yet again can't grab the job, he'll either get sent down or get a chance with another team, probably the latter. The main thing is, they obviously have a plan in place and they know the players better than anyone else, including us. If getting an older seasoned vet who is better than Mac was a priority, they would have done it by now.
Personally I wouldn't mind if they got Lehtonen or whoever for insurance, but in the end I don't think it really would affect the season in a significant way. There wouldn't be much of a difference between him and any other goalie currently in the system IMO.

As your NHL goalie expert, I have to weigh in on this discussion, so we can close this stupid thread, and get back to laughing about Ottawa Senators future
1. Sparks does indeed not look like a good candidate for the NHL backup job. He's a good AHL goalie, but his rebound control is awful.
2. You cannot suggest that it would be wise to get a proven NHL goalie as a backup, and at the same time advocate to bring in KHL mediocre goalies for that exact same job --> these guys have 0 NHL experience. [please try and think before you make an argument, mr x].
3. The Leafs have a guy that has proven NHL backup goalie experience. McElhinney will be part of the team's roster at start of the season.
4. What will probably happen, is that Leafs will put 3 or 4 of the goalies on the NHL 23man roster at start of season. Leafs have alot of options with players that won't have to go through waivers - so they definitely have this option. 2nd week of the season, they can then put Sparks / Pickard through waivers - less likely that any team will pick them up by then. What might happen as well, is an injury in preseason, with the 'conditioning stint' at AHL team for a few games.
At the end of the day, it is what it is - Leafs goaltending isn't great (both starter's position and backup options), but definitely good enough to challenge for a Stanley Cup. |

Same reason why just because you name drop Tim Thomas, doesn't mean Sparks will be that good either.
Point is, the Leafs need a reliable, proven back-up much more than they need to roll the dice on Sparks or Pickard. They have much more to lose than to gain. - Unholy_Goalie

It's a ducking backup...they have 3 possible solutions to battle at camp. There's a very good chance one of them will turn out.
If not? Get one at the deadline for a 4th round pick. This is ridiculous |

Spend the money on D depth. If there are significant injury on D the Leafs have nothing that's guaranteed.
It's pretty simple to see where the Leafs will spend their money next |

I usually come in to work and backread every morning. This morning I started on page 8 or 9 or wherever it was and then just went to page 16.
Judging by the comments, the period in between was every bit as bad as I thought it might be.

Went to pick up my puppy after two weeks away.
She has a lung infection (coughing sounds like my daughter playing the french horn). Needs to stay at the vet at least one more day.
Word of warning: don't even think about franking with me today. I am in a bad mood.
