Dr. John Edwards and Dr. Peter Connor are addiction medicine specialists working at both the Cambridge Clinic and Abbotsford Hospital in Western Australia, and I've had the privilege of spending time with them as part of my medical degree. They both agree that first of all, addiction isn't really a great word because it brings with it a lot of stigma. Putting this aside however, to be diagnosed as addicted you need physical symptoms of tolerance (you require more of the substance to achieve the desired effect) and withdrawal, alongside impaired control, social impairment, and risky behavior. No drug will achieve this combination after just one hit.

Drugs can't change brain chemistry fast enough to make someone instantly dependent. Indeed, a British study of 72 heroin users in 2002 found that it took on average more than a year for people to become hooked to heroin, and none claimed to have been instantly addicted.

Yet you ask people that have done heroin once, they’re hooked and chase that high like no other.

I know many who have done it and they all say the same. They chase it after.

I got lucky as back in the late 90’s I bought what I thought was E. Yeah well it was H and I snorted it. Wasn’t what I thought I bought and it wasn’t for me. I got lucky. Many can’t say the same.

The PhD’s need to broaden their horizons. The opiate epidemic is real yet fading.

You've got serious problems if you just decide to stick a needle in your arm one day without having done anything before. I'm sure some crazy (frank)ers have, there's an exception to every rule, but 99.99999999% of people work up to it. Just snorting it or smoking doesn't give you anywhere near the high of injection.

And sure, people chase the feeling of being drunk without actually being addicted to alcohol. People chase the cocaine high without becoming addicted too.

The main problem is the terminology is dogpoop. Addiction, dependence. You can't be addicted without being dependent. But you can be dependent without being addicted.

The epidemic is definitely not fading either.

The best way to not get addicted is to not use.

Actually the epidemic is fading as the powers that be have put their efforts into the opiate epidemic to try and stop it and it has (for a lack of a better term) quieted. The main focus now for the government is moving back towards stopping cocaine as they’ve looked the other way recently to try and stop the opiate craze.

Old man spent 38 yrs at the boarder. Have connections one wouldn’t believe in law enforcement. They’re afraid that the cocaine craze of the 70’s is on the uprise. Problem is it’s synthetic for the most part. I pass it up on the daily (had three people tonight ask me if I wanted any). It’s rubbish and no thanks. Actually all jokes aside here, it’s been years.

The drug trade has always and will always be steps ahead of the curve.

Chasing the dragon is a slippery slope. Loved me some opium back in the day, now I’ll just stick to booze and the very rare mushrooms.

You mean as interdiction is concerned? That's entirely possible. I have no knowledge of that other than what I read. I do know that more and more people keep dying. I was just reading a couple of weeks ago that the YTD numbers were up over last year. I'll have to see if I can find it.

Looks like the CDC only has numbers up to 2016, but it's not pretty:

Other than connections to law enforcement, had to do a parent seminar for my son who’s going to be a freshman in order for him to play sports and go to dances.

Yes the opiate problem is still there but law enforcement has put all their efforts into the issue. The side effect of that is the cocaine trade is becoming a factor like it hasn’t seen in the past 30ish yrs.

It’s all a vicious cycle. We need to treat the disorder which addicts people in order to stop it. It’s sad really. I see it in the bar industry daily. I guess maybe I’ve stopped the looking for the high. I’d just rather get drunk to get some good sleep instead.

It's whack a mole, cops put effort into one area and the others pop back up.

The real (frank)ed up thing about it is that almost all the deaths are unintentional, in the case of heroin, getting a hot shot with fentanyl in it, or just much more pure than you're used to. With pills, it's usually taking too much in an ill-advised manner and interactions with alcohol.

I'm not downplaying anything. I've been on opioids for 13 years. I'm dependent, yes, but I've never taken more than prescribed, or in a manner other than prescribed(people crush pills and snort them, chew on long acting pills to release more drug, put transdermal fentanyl patches in their mouth, a lot more drug absorbs in your mouth than on your upper arm, chest or back), I've never once lied to anyone about my usage, I've never stolen anything to pay for drugs. I am randomly tested to make sure I'm using them as prescribed, I'm randomly screened for pill counts to make sure I'm not selling.

Addicts chase the high and subsequently require more and more of the drug, I haven't felt "high" after the first year or 2. The problem with opioids is that the LD-50(even for opioid tolerant people) is damn close to the dose required for a high, that's why so many die from overdose. It's physically impossible to die from an OD from smoking pot for example.

People confuse dependence for addiction.

Addiction is a set of behaviors. Almost every addict has underlying mental health issues, including past trauma/abuse. You'll never "cure" the addiction without addressing the underlying issues, something which almost all rehabs singularly ignore, or at best, pay mere lip service to.

- Wetbandit1

Dr. Phil never ignores the underlying issues.

I think of it as we are all 'professionals' of hockey opinions, but when we talk about other poop for extended periods of time, things go off the rails in absurdity. Buckle up, because we have more than a month left of hearing about how gerbe supports his charitable works with someone else's money.
