don't assume that adding a $6M salary on defense will mess the Leafs cap situation.
there's so many hypothetical situations here...
you sound like UG ... Leafs can't afford such and such...
but Tampa somehow magically can.
There is a huge difference.
#1 Half the D on Tampa is UFA\RFA next season. There is 13 mill there.
#2 If TB was to add Karlsson, Sergachev would likely go the other way so no need to worry about that RFA
#3 TB is looking to Offload TJ, Killhorn and Callahan - That is another 15 mill
#4 Leafs as of now have 14 mill in cap space, that goes to 22 mill next season. They still have to sign the likes of Nylander(This season), Marner, Kapanen and Matthews + 4 Defencemen(That includes Gardiner), a back up goalie and 3 additional forwards all next year. Right now Nylander, Marner and Matthews could get 6-8 mill each. That is more than the cap space available and that number will increase if they have good years. Kapanen too.
To have a chance at keeping all these guys, they will need to find takers for Marleau, Horton and maybe even Kadri. |

Having just read the blog I must say that UG is right. Leafs absolutely need to be in on Karlsson. Gardiner, Liligren/Sandin or 2019 first, Nylander. |

Hyman(2.25), Matthews (11), Nylander (7)
Marleau (6.25), Tavares (11), Marner (8)
Kapanen(863k), Kadri (4.5), Brown (2.1)
Leivo (925k), Jooris (925k), Johnsson (787k)
Rielly (5), #2 (7)
Gardiner (4), Zaitsev (4.5)
Dermott (863k), Hainsey(3)
Andersen (5)
McIll (850k)
Phil Kessel (1.2)
Total Cap: $87 M
If we can string things along for a couple years with a bridge deal here or there and ELCs while the Cap goes up, we will be fine. But we are a little limited on the #2 we could get.
(Obviously Gardiner and RFAs are not factor into this, just a quick overview.)
Smarter guys than me, Prindham(?), are working on this for the Leafs. I'm sure they have a well scoped out plan.

Tavares and Marner will both get over 90 points this season.
So that will end that discussion quickly.
Trouba and Dumba are both overvalued.
Dumba is a poor man's Dion Phaneuf (yes, it's possible!!).
Leafs will have the puck 70% of game - which means significant less time in d-zone as well. Leafs need an upgrade on backup goalie (a consitent guy that can play 25-30games) over an upgrade on D imo. - plantheparade
Check the stats: MakeASavey was better than Andersen.
Nope, I am not joking. |

That's not true. They won't need to trade anyone.
Unless you mean everyone they have now plus adding a 6 mil defensemen on top of Gerdener. But I doubt that's their plan. |

Couple of assumptions there. What does AM get? He really hasnt finished a full 2 seasons in the NHL, but yeah you pay the kid and I would think its 10-11.
Same with Willy and Mitchy. Would be awesome if they were had for 6 and 7 respesctively. That would save 2 mil on the cap alone...If we were in a pinch, couldnt we trade the "balace owing" on the Kessel trade to a team needing to make the cap floor?...also how much longer on that hosing is left? That could be potentially 3 mil from that 87 to 84.
If anyone can do it, its the whiz kid dubas.

Isn't the cap $79.5M right now? If the cap goes up 8.5M in one season that would really help us. |

Gardiner is at 4M now, is he really going to re-sign at the same number? |
