Obviously we all have different opinions on what the definition of a contender is, so here is my checklist:

- A team who has CONSISTENTLY shown over previously yearS that they are one of the BEST in the regular season

- A team who has CONSISTENTLY shown they can beat other good teams in the playoffs

- A team who at the very least stayed at the same competitive level or improved over the off-season

How many does your favorite team check off?

If your answer is not ALL of them, then you are not a contender.

If your answer is "I Just Know They Are Because...", then fine 75% of the NHL are contenders.

Can a team win the cup without being considered a contender in the summer, absolutely.

Vegas odds gave my team one of the best odds though, awesome you should read up on how and why odds are given. It's gambling to make a profit, not a prediction.

Are you stupid? Believe what you want, but I don't visit fast food places so I guess we will never meet.

What if the Oilers picked up Holtby, Karlsson, Hedman, Laine, and Crosby in the offseason. Would they be contenders?

Not by your definition.

I would agree on all points you made. Being referred to as a summer time contender isn't the be-all end-all situation, every team still has to play the season.

Have you ever been able to explain why you are so upset that Leafs fans believe their team is a contender?

I mean, I couldn't care less what you think of your team. What is wrong with you that it affects you so deeply that pretty much everyone else considers the Leafs contenders.

15-16 - 56 wins - 120 points - 1st in Metro - Eliminated in 2nd round
16-17 - 55 wins - 118 points - 1st in Metro - Eliminated in 2nd round
17-18 - 49 wins - 105 points - 1st in Metro - Won Stanley Cup

Notice the pattern of consistency?

Now the LA Kings

09-10 - 46 wins - 101 points - 3rd in Pacific - Eliminated in 1st round
10-11 - 46 wins - 98 points - 4th in Pacific - Eliminated in 1st round
11-12 - 40 wins - 95 points - 3rd in Pacific - Won Stanley Cup
12-13 - 27 wins - 59 points - 2nd in Pacific - Eliminated in 3rd round
13-14 - 46 wins - 100 points - 3rd in Pacific - Won Stanley Cup

Notice the pattern of consistency before their first cup? Yup, was not considered a contender then or now. When they won their 2nd cup they not only won a Cup prior, but also showed they can make it far in the playoffs after they won. Yes, in 13-14 they were considered a contender at the time.

What point are you trying to make? Vegas wasnt a contender at this time last year either. They were expected to be a bottom team. Flyers were expected to be a bottom team and according to people here Washington was going to miss the playoffs. During the offseason no one was saying Washington is going to win the cup. It was all about Tampa, Pittsburgh, Nashville. Like I have been saying Contender is literally just the general consensus of the teams that have a good chance at winning the cup. I made a post much earlier that posted both Flyers and Leafs and their teams were identical. One had a step up in goaltending while the other had a step up on D.

I will disagree with the part in bold. Maybe for you and what you experience Washington was no contender, but in my circle it was a make or break and it was slipping away with all the success they have had.

Also don't bother comparing the Flyers and Toronto, no matter how many facts are used some will always say the Flyers are more comparable to Arizona.
