There is a difference from what a player and team offer for an arbitration hearing to what they are discussing in long term deals. Also, since Trouba is under team
Control for two more years, technically the jets could go
To arbitration this year and select the one year option and then next go back to arbitration and select the two year option. No need to panic when a player can not leave on his own for three years. - Ross77
It doesn't work like that. The arbitrator will only reward a 1 year contract if the player is set to become a UFA in next season.
Basically arbitration will not allow a team to buy a year of a players UFA.
If he wants out, he will be gone at the most 2 years.
Depending on what is rewarded, If I'm the Jets, I go for a 2 year deal and trade him. If he is awarded between 5 to 5.5, a team will pay big to get 2 years out of him at that cost before he demands huge money.

Could be wrong here, but I believe the arbitrator must award one of the amounts asked for. Either by team or player. So in this case... 4M or 7M.

I could also be wrong here, but i believe the arbitrator decides a number and both parties have to agree

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure the team has the 1 or 2 year option no matter if the player is a UFA in one year. I think the Jets lose trade value if they go the two year route now. I think a team would rather acquire a player in need of a contract under team control than one who can walk away in 1-2 years. It gives the aquiring team a better chance of getting a long term deal. Either way, Chevy has established himself as someone who will not rush a trade just to make one. I still see him signing a 4-5 year deal.

Player-elected salary arbitration and the Player in Club-elected salary arbitration) shall elect in its brief whether the salary arbitration award shall be for a one or two-year SPC. Failure to make such an election shall be deemed to constitute an election for a one-year SPC.
