Hate to tell you this, but Vegas was a total fluke and won't make the Playoffs again. SJ and MN are two teams on the way down.

Just like capitols we’re lucky. 82games plus playoffs isn’t Luck cloutier.

I thought the same thing. To unload that contract and give up fringe. I'll give Bowman that deal

what about the Hjalmarsson trade....and the blackhawks saying it was about getting a younger defense group. so they trade away a 30yo dman whos one of the best in his own zone...amazing shot blocker... a guy who can you can play 20+min a night for a 25yo murphy who is no where close to the player of Hjalmarsson. and doesnt show the potential to be much more than what he is currently. hawks worst trade by far with the coyotes. hjalmarsson was getting underpaid by the hawks and murphy was getting overpaid by the coyotes.

the amazing thing is the coyotes didnt even have to give up any picks...which as odd when a trade happens before the draft starts. at least if they got murphy daulphin and a 2nd round pick it would seem maybe the hawks were getting something to build on.

Well lets wait to see what a 30 year old Hammer does for the Yotes!
His Corsi was -4.1 rel. to the team.(Tanner makes this to easy) So obviously the Hawks sold high on Hammer

Also any player that has a large amount of blocked shots sucks. Because all that means is that they are trapped in their own end making bad plays(right Jimmy?)
All this is mute anyways. Because the sample size is way to small!

It was only -2.2% relative to the team and his usage was pretty extreme. I don't usually care too much about usage, but he's on a team that was getting killed game in and game out and they basically only put him on the ice for defense.

There are certain players who that would be true for. But Hjallmarsson gets the puck out. He's a very good defenseman. Guys like Polak, who can't get out of their own zone but hit and block shots, they suck. I don't think blocked shots is a very good stat to be honest. You still allowed a shot attempt and now you might be injured. I think goalies would actually do better if no one ever blocked a shot. Just get out of the way and let him see it. Of course that's unrealistic, and counter intuitive, but I think it has some merit.

Not according to your past rhetoric,
Any player with extreme "D" zone starts is because they get trapped out on the ice because they suck.

Whom is "they"
I assume the coach?
Are you saying that the coach has certain players he uses for "D" zone starts?
Because this would be in direct contradiction to what you have been preaching for years now!

Actually, Panik has pretty well shown what he is already. His ceiling is not much higher than what he showed in Tampa.

Panik has good vision, hands, and can score. He also has a physical side. He looks great for 3 to 10 games, and then he vanishes for 20+ games. It doesn't seem to matter who his linemates are, this has been a pattern everywhere he has played,

Happily, because I live in AZ the whole year go to more games, the Coyotes are well managed and Chayka will have them in the playoffs in 2 years.

This is exactly right, and it's why his analytical numbers show better than his actual results. It's also where Tanner goes off course. What Tanner does well in player analysis is the research into the numbers, finding statistical anomalies and pointing them out. Where Tanner goes wrong is in treating those anomalies like gospel. They are important, and they can suggest that we take a longer look to understand a player better, but they are only part of the story. The eyes, and what we can see in person, also matter.

In this instance, Panik may be a better defensive player, and thus overall player, than we assume, but that may be because he is tremendous for a 5-game stretch, and then is invisible for a dozen or so games. He has enough of a track record for us to know that he's just another guy, really.

That was the Isles plan last year. Doesn't work too well. Of course when you have your own defensemen feeding open opponents in the slot, that doesn't work too well either.

See that's why he's underrated because when defensive players don't score, casual fans think they 'disappear.'

If a player is mainly useful because he scores, the eye test matters. It matters for getting a general idea of how useful a player is. But there is way too many things going on in a hockey game for a person to notice every little thing that leads to good defense. It is why defensive players are routinely ignored and underrated, and why guys who score but don't do much else get overrated/

Says the guy who uses small samples sizes to make David Runblad the next Bobby Orr. Yes, the Yotes got Hammer, but don't think for a second that Bowman got fleeced. It's a salary cap casualty that comes from having inflated salaries from winning. Pittsburgh know this. And now the Caps will have to deal with it.

Enjoy that stellar ex-Hawk line of Panik-Bolland-Hossa. Can't wait to see the Corsi. Please make sure you post the parade route for all the trade winning you are doing.

2 articles in 2 days taking a swipe at the Hawks.
This Tanner guy does not like them.

- creighton30

Don't take it personal. He's always talked poop about the Hawks. Some of it deserved, some of it probably because he liked the emotional response of the Hawks fans in the comments section.

I dare you to even find one thing I ever wrote where I said David Runblad would be Jason Demers, let alone Bobby Orr.

But lying aside, the Pens had a competent GM and are still the among the best teams in the NHL while the Blackhaws are among the worst teams in the NHL.

About two years ago we had this discussion about good players with bad corsi #'s.
I tried to explain to you then that zone starts matter! You chose to double down on your terrible view on corsi and told me that those zone starts are because the player was bad, Gets caught in his own end because of his play, Yet now(as usual) when the narrative doesn't fit your objective you choose to use zone starts(usage) in defense of a player.
One of the most annoying parts about bloggers on the internet is despite being factually proved in the wrong over and over again, Instead of using these instances as learning blocks, They instead lash out at anyone whom calls them out on their arrogance, And complete misuse of very basic concepts.
All i can do is feel pity for anyone in your life who has to tolerate your arrogance toward other people. Life is to short to be as intolerable as you are Jimmy!
Go have a smoke, And relax. Also do not forget your rent will be due in a bit, So i hope this "click" helps you in some small way!
