Tampa isn't getting Karlsson, they can't afford him. Just like we can't. Which everyone can see except you. - TrashPanda
You don't know that. He's agreed to an extension with them and they have 3 guys becoming UFAs next year that equal 11.2 million so obviously they can afford him otherwise Yzerman wouldn't be involved at all. If they move Killorn and/or Callahan, they can fit him for next year. Yzerman isn't stupid. |

Widely reported Ottawa allowed teams to talk to Karlsson and that Tampa Bay was the destination because they more or less agreed to an extension Karlsson agreed to. |

The problem is clearing the cap space for this coming season. They have the space for the extension, it's his 6.5 million cap hit this year they need to clear for. They tried to move Callahan back to New York but it fell through. They may cave in and just trade Killorn or somebody else with a 4-5 million dollar cap hit. |

Trouba might still want out and Winnipeg does have cap problems next year. Not the same tier but maybe a good fit for less plus keep Nylander. Gardiner can take a hike for all I care. - dwoo33
this would be a much less damaging option for the Leafs to consider... moving Gardiner + for Trouba if his contractual situation is ugly (we'll know more later this week)...
and don't have to give up Nylander and and and to get him....
Gardiner is going to want to get paid if he has another 50+ point season.... and moving him at the deadline could be problematic.
Karlssion will want Doughty money... and however you want to slice it that would be too much tied up in 4-5 players.

And you're not listening; Ottawa is going to avoid tanking if they can. Acquiring Nylander and Gardiner do that more so than acquiring a bunch of picks and prospects. - Unholy_Goalie
you need to type louder - try all caps. |

Less damaging? How about less beneficial. He's played 5 seasons in the NHL and he's never scored more than 33 points in a season. He had 3 points in 17 playoff games this year. Comparatively, Karlsson carried the Senators to within an OT goal from the Cup Final two years ago. There's a significant difference in quality there.
You pay a lower price and you get lower quality. Top-four defensemen like Trouba you can sign as a UFA. Guys like Karlsson rarely become available. |

I wonder how active Dubas is right now. I'm curious if he actually is competing with Stevie Y on the big names on D right now, namely Karlsson and Trouba.
It would be cool to see Tampa grab Karlsson then the Leafs trade for Trouba. F U Boston.
edit** Parayako (who I doubt is available) would be an amazing grab as well. |

I get your point that that level of elite is rarely available. Rielly-Karlsson would likely be best in the NHL. Still Karlsson has a certain level of risk that the other elite guys like Doughty and Hedman don't have.
I say pass, but (frank) Rielly-Karlsson |

Tampa was obviously in on Tavares so Karlsson is a hell of a plan B. Yzerman is a stud. |

Risk and reward. Nobody else is available. That's the best guy available. That's what you have to take. I'd rather have Doughty, Hedman, Ekblad; lots of other guys but none of them are available. And the odds of them becoming available are slim to none.
Given the other players on the team, Karlsson wouldn't be relied upon to do everything like he was in Ottawa. That reduction in stress could help reduce the risk of acquiring him. |

He played with Lidstrom for a long time. He knows what Karlsson and Hedman type guys bring to the table. He's a genius if he gets Karlsson. |

He replaces some minutes on the blueline. He scores points. He helps them avoid the lottery pick. He's cheaper than Karlsson, less up front money to re-sign.
Plus, they took Phaneuf, they took Gaborik; they're stupid. |
