Maybe in Ottawa they will remember him that way but Erik Karlsson is not Bobby Orr. Not even close. Karlsson hasnt even been the best all around Dman in the league.

Bobby Orr won the norris 8 straight times.

Different Eras I know buts these arent even close.

BO 10 yrs BOS NHL Games 631 G264 A624 888 +574
EK Career OTT NHL Games 627 G126 A392 518 -37

Ek is a career -37...

Who there, sorry to have upset you, just wanted to clear a couple of things up before you blow a gasket.. Never said Karlsson was Orr, (who has ironically enough said himself that Karlsson's style reminds him of..himself), but that in the future people will definitely recognize how special and unique he is/was, the same way they do with Orr.

Different eras is a bit of an understatement too, but good call comparing plus minus (possibly the worst stat in the game) from an era where strong teams were putting up +100 over a year easily, now even the best teams struggle to top +50.

And I would assume it would be easier to win the Norris when there were like 70 D in the entire league, so that achievement (while great) is not really comparable any longer either. If you don't think the EK has been the best "all around", you should probably watch more hockey involving other teams than BOS

He is the superior all around Hockey Player. Everyone talks about they LA defence, when it was pretty much just Doughty and some has beens or never will be’s.

He might not be flashy but if I want to win championships he’s the 1st defenceman I pick 10/10 times.

Aside from offence...what does Karlsson do that Doughty doesn’t do better? Certainly not win.

- HonkyTonkMan

Takeaways, breakouts, speed... You're right though, I don't think there is any chance that LA wins either of those Cups if Karlsson is on there instead of Doughty, in fact I think that if Doughty and Karlsson were on opposite teams, OTT would have 2 cups since they came in the league and LA would have none. (prob the same with Olympic Gold medals, you flip EK to Canada and Doughty to Sweden, Tre Kroners are back to back champs for sure)

Leafs got a generational talent for only money. I use this as an example because it was well known that Taveras is from Toronto. Ottawa has to move Karlsson or they risk losing their best player for nothing.
- millhouse

Are you talking about Tavares? Holy poop, the guy isn't even elite. Eric Staal must be generational as well!

Take the homer glasses off. EK is an elite offensive defenceman but is in no way THE best in the game today.
Bobby Orr changed the game of hockey in to the way defence is played today. To even put any of todays players into the same conversation as Orr is delusional at best.

Debatable. But not a bad debate to have. Definitely a shot unlike any others.
- YzermanTheMan

Not really, his ability to score goals (and play physically) as been unmatched

Kinda think is 65 goals season is more impressive than the 92 from Gretzky when the goalies were matches, nothing close to the sumo like equipment now. Not even getting into technique

Who is the best today? And why? How did Orr change the game of hockey, and how D is played? Why does he compare Erik Karlsson to himself?

Homer glasses? maybe take off your hater glasses, and hop on this thing called the internet. There are 1000's of articles like this one, and mostly from outside of Ottawa.

I will also reiterate, I never compared him to Orr, but said that he is so unique that he may very well be the Bobby Orr equivalent to today's generation of kids

Haha come on try a little harder than that.... Do you think that someone who is 10 years old today is more likely to tell their kids about Bobby Orr or Erik Karlsson, since they only ever saw one of them play live? More likely to talk about McDavid or Gretzky? Crosby or Lemieux? Its..not hard

I am not really sure people will ever talk about players the way they swoon over players of the past now. Back then fans really only got to see out of town players play pretty infrequently so it was easier to be wowed. Which is why all star games used to be awesome in all sports. Now it’s just meh.

Now we are over saturated with ways to watch and talent that it is hard to truly appreciate great players. I can spend $150 and watch pretty much any game I want.

Karlsson is not that polarizing of a player. He will be a legend in Ottawa just like Patrice will be a legend here. But joe shmo from Idaho probably isn’t talking about either of them.
