Just out of interest, that data showing points in the AHL etc for the lower end guys, would also have an impact for the top end - although granted the top end guys would probably have very little data due to them playing NHL pretty much directly.

But it would be interesting to see the stats on the higher point scorers & how many of them actually got to their projected ceiling based on this theory & how many scored well In the AHL but couldn't transition that into the big boys league.

I know that the numbers were all posted at one point, I just don't remember when. I also don't recall if it was Ryan or Tanner who had them. It may have even been pensburgh.

Still not much to talk about around here.

We should stick to off season players' vacations.

I'd bet more hit that ceiling and don't make it than don't hit the ceiling and make it. Probably more Chris Bourques out there than Riley Sheahans, for example.

Age has a lot to do with it.

I’d like to see the data on guys that make it that never fought until their pro career vs guys that played junior and fought the entire time. For example, Parros and Scott played college and never fought until the AHL and ended up making nice careers for themselves. Mirasty has fought 20 times a year since 15 and barely sniffed the nhl. Was that always his ceiling? What do the numbers show? How can we twist them to fit our own views. These are the questions that need answered damnit.

I’m sure those stats have dropped dramatically over the past ten years. With the decline of fighting, I have to think players who made their way in by fighting is all but done.

I think that's even how Engelland made his mark.

I'd much rather see an objective blog that lists both top & bottom with some results positives& negative rather than old info rehashed just to try & put poop on a NHL player - very experienced if games played is that, indirectly.

I put this out the other day about how age affects players. And this theory about AHL to NHL falls into that a little, where older players debuting in the NHL don't have experience & therefore would already be behind players of the same age that have a few years under their belt. Analytics just don't account for so much in my opinion & should very well be taken as a small example of how to assess a player. Unfortunately blogs like this appear to take them as gospel. People laugh at some of grinders calls, but he is probably just the parallel to analytics. So laugh at him, but he laughs at a lot of analytics & I understand why.

I disagree. While I have my issues with how analytics are used and viewed at times, I think they're a very useful tool in evaluating a player. They're not (to me) the only way to measure a player, but they shouldn't be minimized, either.

I think they are great as putting a bunch of pieces to the puzzle together.

Engelland was playing a lot of minutes in the AHL while beating the living poop out of tough guys left and right. His AHL fight highlights are quite impressive considering he was fighting bigger dudes that pretty much only fight.
