He spent the year analyzing the talent of the team. He rolled with Murray's core, swapped out a couple spare parts. You can't build through UFA and trading for long term significant players is extremely difficult. Saying "He shot for Dahlin" or "he thought he could be a playoff contender" is kinda off the mark.

I'm certain they tried to win. I'm certain he did the best he could with what he had. But now he has an idea of what will and won't work, internally and externally, on and off the ice. Changing the makeup of the team over a year is tough. Over 2 months, like last year, is impossible.

I scanned for key words in the CBA. I'll be damned if i read that whole thing. The word conditional never appears in a context next to the word trade.

Vogl says they can be traded.

"Trade" means the transfer, other than as a result of a claim by Waivers, from one
Club's Reserve List or Free Agent List to another Club's Reserve List or Free Agent List of a
Player's SPC, the rights to a Player (including his SPC, if applicable) on such Club's Reserve List
or Free Agent List, and/or the rights to a draft choice in the Entry Draft.

That's from the CBA.

I don't believe from my cursory reading that it is expressly forbidden by the CBA

It's hard to compare because Schiefle played 2 years in Juniors after being drafted, whereas Reinhart only played 1. Just about anyone outside of Buffalo, as well as most people inside Buffalo, will tell you that Schiefle is the better player, but using where they were at in year 3 as a pro is a bad metric. Age had a lot to do with it.
