Who says he’s elite? He’s not a shlep, he a good player with nhl experience. I get tired of people bagging on him because he did better in the 2nd half.

I get tired of the puritans wanting to run our best players out of town. The Sabres would’ve been better off keeping Kane and O’Rielly.

Jbotts trades are similar to Tim Murray’s trades, not a high enough level coming back.

That's usually what pessimists say, yes
- jcragcrumple

I'll be happy to be wrong, but it seems silly to suggest that the Sabres are somehow going to be a much better team this year based on the roster we're looking at now. It really looks like Botts is playing the long game, as in being maybe a year or two from a competitive playoff bound team. Nothing wrong with that, really. I assume he's a realist as well.

But of course, Hope springs eternal in Sabresland.

Homie I’m looking for a good plug and you seem to be smoking the best stuff on this board.

Is it because we would all be able to watch gerbe's snapchat of him diving into a volcano from his dad's private jet?

Wouldn’t be the first time.... warning flags are starting to pop up with him. But let’s see what the actual contract is first.
- gordong

A good contract for Sam still puts Botts at a -3 on the trade market. We didn’t have to trade O’Rielly, we could’ve held him and probably would’ve gotten a similar deal in season trade.

Kane and O’Rielly, our two top scorers gone and nothing back to replace them, bad, bad, bad.

beaulieu
waiting on the kane trade
wilson
beaulieu
chad johnson
hoarding left D
leaf trade
griffith with the big club to start the year

those all come to mind at a glance

- homiedclown

all those players come with context.

Bowls- 3rd round pick for an NHL ready defender. Solid gamble IMO, especially because he was a well known commodity at that point

Kane- No one knows for sure, so if you go by the words of the GM, it was "the only deal". Just like recent train wreck Pierre Dorian and his bending over of Hoffman.

Wilson- A 5th for an NHL player that can bring cup experience and leadership and can jump around the bottom 3 lines? Sign me up. He's cheap and can play. I don't see anything wrong with him.

Chad Johnson- Played very well in CGY the year prior. Had a meltdown, only signed to one year. NBD. We sucked anyway.

LD- Yeah, we need more RDs. But who'd we bring in? Pilut, a premium UDFA and Hickey, destined for Roch. Yep, we need more RDs for certain.

Leaf Trade- I won't even bother here. Insignificant, yet odd asset management. 6th round picks hardly ever turn into anything. So we get 2 in 2019 and 0 in 2018. Year to year difference is nil. Then again, I love watching Pennywise go (frank)ing bananas.

Griffith/Tennyson- Griffith earned it out of camp. It's less of an indictment on Housley (not Botts) than it is on the atrocious depth of the team, at that point. Our wing depth was even more pathetic last year than it is this year. At least this year, we have a few guys that can actually push for NHL minutes.

I'm not getting on my knees for Botts, but I don't think he's really done a bad job up to this point. I haven't seen any egregious asset management. In fact, you're starting to see a plan being put into place here. Freeing up long term cap space, while setting a foundation for the roster and allowing the prospects grow until they're actually ready for the NHL. I like what he's done and I don't really have any reason to dislike anything so far.

I havent able to find anyone in the NHL league offices to answer the question relative to trading conditional picks, but John Vogl says they are tradeable. My sister tweeted at him

if the goal was to roll the dice for Dahlin, he gets an A+

if he wanted to see if he could ice a fringe playoff team, he gets a C-

we will never know what he was trying to do, my guess is dahlin

He's all but admitted that this is his plan. He's building a foundation with prospects and surrounding them with great young players and vets that know how to win.

He spent the year analyzing the talent of the team. He rolled with Murray's core, swapped out a couple spare parts. You can't build through UFA and trading for long term significant players is extremely difficult. Saying "He shot for Dahlin" or "he thought he could be a playoff contender" is kinda off the mark.

I'm certain they tried to win. I'm certain he did the best he could with what he had. But now he has an idea of what will and won't work, internally and externally, on and off the ice. Changing the makeup of the team over a year is tough. Over 2 months, like last year, is impossible.
