They won't lose any actual money, but they'll have to accommodate a potentially crippling cap hit...which means shedding salary/players. And not the cheap, crappy ones.

Are all years a total cap hit loss up until each subsequent year? Obviously, its not the cap hit for each year if he retires

I think him retiring at any point in the last three years of his deal would be the worst for them. They've been smart enough that they can probably successfully accommodate a ~$3M penalty for the next 7-8 years. But if they had to accommodate $8M+ for three years that would be really, really tough. It would be god-awful if they had to accommodate $24M for a year. Right now that'd be almost 1/3 of the entire cap. By then I'm sure it won't be as significant of a percentage, but that's still a metric ton of cap space to lose.

That last year is the best. Granted, cap will go up by then, but thats still a butt load of cap.

Yeah, so if he retired prior to the 2020-21 season, they would have a cap hit of $4,095,238 for 6 seasons.

If he retires prior to the 2025-26 season, they'll have the $24,571,428 cap hit for one season.

They could get royally, royally screwed by the Flyers offer sheeting him all those years ago

I don’t fully understand the cap recapture thing, how is MTL not on the hook for anything like that?
