Good honest analysis of Manning by the Flyers HB blogger. He describes Manning as effective if he is in the 6th spot meaning the 1-5 spots are stacked. That wasn't the Flyers last year and is certainly not the Hawks this year (or last year for that matter). The blog talks about Manning's limitations and the main praise are his maximum effort and capacity to stick up for his teammates. Admirable no doubt, but far from ideal if there are questions marks up and down the Hawks blueline.

I'm in the camp that wants to give Manning a chance to play an effective role on the Hawks. Just like every other player, his success hinges on everyone being properly slotted and/or everyone buying into and employing a relentless system. Attack in waves on offense and shrink the ice on defense.

I can see Stan doing the 1 year deal with Rick Nash. So a top 6 would be:

Nash Toews Cat
Saad Schmaltzy Kaner

Nash and AA camped out in front of the net on the PP would look pretty good!

- z1990z

Just say no to Nash. He will miss half the year with injuries anyway.

Dont know anything about Manning. Confusing signing by Stan it appears. Wonder if Q had a hand in that?

Was reading Dobber and they got to Detroit's Mantha and his bridge deal. Found it interesting as it pertains to whether or not the Hawks should sign Dcat and Schmaltz to bridge or long term deals and how those deals can/will affect the cap longer term. And does signing a FA vet even for 1 yr have longer term consequences?

Detroit signed Anthony Mantha to a bridge deal a couple days ago. Here’s the thing about that: even after they LTIR Johan Franzen, they’ll have about $6.7-million in cap space left to sign Dylan Larkin, who is due a new contract. And it’ll be a lengthy and expensive one. Probably not more than $6.7-million – Matt Cane’s projections have it at around $6.3-million – but it doesn’t matter. Even if he comes in at $6.3-million, there wouldn’t have been enough money left over to sign Mantha to the long-term deal he should get. Instead of a bridge deal of two years at $3.3-million, he probably should have had a five- or six-year deal at $4.5-million. They couldn’t sign that deal without trading someone because of how bad their cap has been managed. Instead of signing a 24-year old for five or six years, they’ll be signing a 26-year old for five or six years (Mantha). And if he can manage a couple of 25-goal seasons in the meantime, his price will be going up.

And that’s how signing Thomas Vanek for one year at $3-million can cost you millions of dollars down the road.

From what I read online, Q wanted Manning. It was known that Q wanted a defensive defenseman and 'm guessing Manning was on a list of guys Q desired. That isn't to say Manning was tops on that list. If Manning was in fact a Q pick, Manning is going to be in the lineup no matter what he does or doesn't do.

I think, and agree, the Hawks are at a point where they need a few legit NHL players and Manning falls into that category. They are not finding an out of house top 4 Dman or top 6 forward without creating another hole by trading a Schmaltz type or mortgaging the future by trading top prospect/picks.

So instead of coming in like last season hoping a Gus, Forsling, Kampf type can be a legit NHL player they are instead adding guys like Manning, Kunitz, Kruger who they know have played seasons in the league and are not questions of can they play in the NHL or not.

No they are not top 4 D or top 6 F's but are certain NHL players who didn't cost anything of real value. No they are not position specific in that they slot perfectly to a need, but they won't be a clown show as last season was cuz they are legit NHL players.

TVR is a younger Rozy. 75% of the fan base think he sucks cuz he isn't mobile, or worse, but 100% of the coaches understand his value.

Does he? Boston isn’t winning the title every year. Bergeron doesn’t shut everyone down. Also Bergeron wasn’t in the Leafs’ locker room where Matthews was having pre-game meltdowns completely on his own.

If Marcus Kruger is your 3rd line center you’re in trouble. Compare the Hawks center depth minus AA to the rest of the league and it looks incredibly weak. Gotta be strong down the middle to win in the playoffs.
- SimpleJack

Hawk C depth is weak with or without AA. Adding Kruger helps in that he is a legit NHL centerman and at one time with the Hawks had excellent fancy stat suppression numbers.

The Hawks are better at C and as a team with Kruger than without him, on this roster.

I haven't. Thought the Hawks would end up losing that game but Emery singlehandedly preserved the team's great start to the '13 season that evening.

Capfriendy is showing the Hawks cap space went down from $9.3M to $5.5M. At first I thought they made a trade but it turns out the Hawks brought up 5 guys that had been on the AHL roster - Kampf, Hayden, Ejdsell, Schroeder and Tyler Sikura. So the roster now has 14 forwards, 6 d-men and 2 goalies - with $5.5M cap space.

I wonder why they would add those guys to the NHL roster now?

I doubt the Hawks did anything - CapFriendly is just making a guess of who is going to be on the team. Probably to give a more accurate representation of cap space that is really available, kind of like when they moved Forsberg down to the non-roster section but he most definitely will have to pass through waivers to go to the AHL. I think they may be basing it partially on Sean Tierney's roster projections.

I think 1 or 2 blogs ago someone here posted that he sent an email to CF asking why Forsberg wasn’t on the NHL roster any longer and the answer was something like that it’s not based on official roster moves and just should be kind of a realistic roster and representation of cap soace at that point, as you said.
