I don't think this D group has a problem breaking out.

Rielly, Gardiner, and Dermott all did a good job with the breakout last year. Obviously Gardiner telegraphed more stretch passes than the others, and I also think he missed more stretch passes than the others (he had 185 Icings against when on the ice, which was the most of all D, compared to 146 for Rielly, who was second). I'm not sure if looking at that stat as an indicator of failed stretch passes is fair, but that's how *I'm* using it for the purposes of this illustration.

I think everyone would prefer controlled zone entries, so the stretch pass starts that from the back-end well, but to be honest, it's the same crap that the Leafs did under Carlyle that backfired when they were less talented.

At least with Rielly, Gardiner, and Dermott (and hopefully Z next year), they can skate, which gives them options. Even Carrick isn't too bad at it.

Hainsey is probably the biggest detriment to being a catalyst for the offense. His breakout passes are mediocre at best, and he has virtually no ability to skate the puck out.

I take back my comment on Chayka being a great GM.
What a terrible move; helping out Chicago and getting virtually nothing in return.
At least on the Detroit trade they managed a good pick to draft Chychrun

- plantheparade

everyone poops on chayka's moves to start; including the detroit move.

he's brought in 3 top 4 dmen - hammer, demers, chychurn - for basically the cost of nothing. all moves that were criticized.

i agree, the return seems light. but let's see what hinostroza does with the yotes.

However, he is the only decent PK'ing defender left with Polak gone.

Yes.

To be better than Dubas, you either have to be an even younger numbers guy or you need to have a foot in the grave. But 32, what a terrible age to be a GM.

I won't consider Polak gone until he either signs elsewhere or dies.

Even him saying he retires wouldn't convince me. He'd come back on that third pairing for sure at some point.

Looks like hyman with way more skill.

It will be something to see Tavares and Matthews on the powerplay together, or the dying minute of a game if their down a goal.
