Karlsson's value is as low as it's ever going to be. His numbers last year weren't great. He's coming off foot surgery. He's got 1 year left on his deal, he hates the owner, he wants out of town and the Senators have little to no leverage.

Karlsson is a very good, prime aged RHD but he's not the best defenseman in the world. That's either Doughty or maybe even Hedman at this point. Karlsson is easily a top tier defenseman but he doesn't do absolutely everything; he does one thing better than anyone and that's score points.

Regardless of what they want, all the Leafs need to do is offer more than the other teams are offering. At this point, taking Bobby Ryan (with at least 2-3 million retained) off their hands too, Nylander, Gardiner and a 1st is actually a good haul for them.

I mean if they're desperate, maybe, but they aren't. Like I said, the Sens value him as being the best defenseman in the league and will want that value back. Nylander, Gardiner and a 1st isn't enough.

To me it would be like the Leafs trading Tavares, who is a franchise player, similar age, etc. for Ehlers, Myers and a low 1st. Seems like ok value but I doubt anyone would be happy with that and I doubt Dubas would ever do that. The Leafs would be targeting Laine +++ for a top 5 centre.

The Bobby Ryan salary dump is not that big of a deal if you look at salary dumps in the past and won't really affect the Sens main value. Maybe knock off a prospect or low 1st round pick but nothing that would negatively influence the main components of a deal of this magnitude.

Maybe this is why the deal is taking so long to complete, nobody wants to give up meaningful pieces. But hey, you never know, we'll see when we find out what they finally get for Karlsson.

Well, with that, there's only one thing left to do...

Ryan* / Tavares / Marner
Marleau / Matthews / Kapanen
Hyman / Kadri / Brown
Johnsson / Letestu (1 year) / Ennis
Leivo

*(Max 4 AAV only if absolutely necessary)

Rielly / Karlsson (10 AAV)
Dermott / Zaitsev
Hainsey / Carrick
Borgman

Andersen
Lehtonen (1 year)

Yup, that roster looks worse than the one we have at the moment. Hard pass.

I really don't think offense from our blueline is an issue. It's the god damn over reliance on the stretch passes .

Our team defence is already better with the addition of Tavares kapanen and jonsson.

Jvr and bozak weee defensive liabilities, and our defence is the same as last year.

I didn’t mind the stretch pass except for when polak was attending it.

Was bored and on hockeydb...Carolina has a lot of nice forward prospects taken in rounds 2 to 7 over the past few drafts.

Was looking for possible young dmen. Still wish we could get Rasmus or kyllington from Calgary for cheap.

The stretch pass is fine.

It's the flipped puck 50/50 regain possession jump ball scenario that they use too much. They dump the puck to centre ice and hope that Marner is able to gain possession instead of having people that can actually break out correctly and make 100% sure you have possession going into the neutral zone.

Curious what the return for that would be.

And that's where I think our defense is ok with this forward group. We don't have any weak lines anymore.

I'd disagree with that sentiment. The breakout starts with the D.

I don't think this D group has a problem breaking out.

I'm curious as to how Scotia Bank believes that spending $80 million on naming rights will bring in more than $80 million in revenue, PER YEAR!!

I take back my comment on Chayka being a great GM.
What a terrible move; helping out Chicago and getting virtually nothing in return.
At least on the Detroit trade they managed a good pick to draft Chychrun

Don't know much about him but Hinostroza picked up 25 points in 50 games last season. Could be a player going forward.
