I'm curious as to how Scotia Bank believes that spending $80 million on naming rights will bring in more than $80 million in revenue, PER YEAR!!
- currphij

Hard to measure advertising returns on such an investment. A couple of things that can be stated safely.

First, all in attendance at Leaf Games, Raptor games and any concerts or other events will see a significant amount of advertising.

Second (and this is more important) Canadian Banks make money - lots of it, I'm a shareholder, they pay me a quarterly dividend of about 4% per year and the stock has appreciated about 40% in five years and experienced one stock split. Because I re-invest the dividends, the investment five years ago is worth well over 3 times what I paid for it.

Back to the $80 million - yes hard to measure the payback as you point out - but hard to agrue with their success.

They did it to raise their profile. Of all of Canada's major banks they are dead last, in the financial sector they are known as Canada's 'worst' bank. Associating themselves with a contender helps them a lot here, since the majority of their business is retail customers.

Not really accurate - in terms of worldwide revenue Bank of Nova Scotia was over $20 Billion US in 2016 ranking second to Royal Banks' $28 Billion US. In terms of assets, they rank 4th behind Royal, CIBC and TD. CIBC has significant mortgage exposure that other banks avoid and make less profit. TD is my favorite to invest in. They are all good. Royal pays the smallest dividend in terms of yield. So when you say "worst" bank - what are you basing this on? Stock performance, dividend yield or customer service ? ( I don't give a sh!t about their customer service)

It is customer service and number of errors.

I never said they weren't insanely profitable, you have to (frank) up really bad not to make money when you're a bank.

When I make an investment decision these days, I do so with some regard for ethics, however, I do like to invest in companies that are wieners generally speaking. They seem to make more money for me.
