it would have been sweeter if the leafs re-signed jvr last summer, then signed tavares this summer and traded bozak and komarov last summer up to before the trade deadline to fill obvious holes on their defense. now all 3 are gone and tavares is here and the defense is still the same baby soft poop it always has been AND the leafs will have to move actual assets to improve it.

melnyk will want the leafs to overpay for trading in the division...nylander, 1st, liljegren, zaitsev

Yeah, I was hoping for 2-3 years. Around $1.5-2 million.

For the record, I honestly don’t see Tampa being able to do it either. Especially having to sign Point and Gourde as well. It’s bananas

But I meant 4 guys making more than half the cap just doesn’t seem like a recipe for success. You have 5 guys not including EK making just under 38 million. Tampa would have to wheel and deal for sure...which makes me believe the Leafs would have to as well.

Can move Horton to LTIR
Move Marleau if necessary. The final year of his deal is perfect for a team like Arizona.
Plus we finally have all of those buyouts from the Burke/Nonis era off the books..

Erik Karlsson is Erik Karlsson. It should speak for itself.

He's not Drew Doughty, he's not perfect but he's a top-pairing RHD and the team we have to beat to get past the 2nd round wants to get him. It should be a no-brainer.

as it turned out, there were teams interested in these players in free agency. so they obviously had some value, i'm sure the leafs could have made 1 for 1 deals for decent defensemen that would likely be better than what they currently have in their bottom let's say 3.

While I don't think Dubas will over-react and then overpay for Karlsson simply because of the Tampa angle.. I do think we have enough pieces to get Karlsson..

Even if he did over react and over pay, it might still be worth it. Norris winning defensemen do not become available every day. Look at what Pronger did for Edmonton and then for Anaheim. If those two teams don't jump on that chance, do they go to the Finals? Win a Cup?

One in hand is better than two in the bush. For the Leafs right now, you can't sit back and hope that another guy like Karlsson just falls in your lap.

1% of me right now almost wishes we had Burke at the helm because it's that type of "go get him NOW" type of moments and it's actually the right time to do it with everything else pretty much in place already.

I wouldn't pay that price. Not worth it.

100% worth it. Karlsson is by far the best player in the trade and exactly what the Leafs need. The Leafs wouldn't be giving up anything they couldn't replace.

Liljegren? Sandin replaces him.

Zaitsev? Who gives a poop, Ozy can replace him at half the price.

Nylander? Hurts to lose him but they have Matthews, Marner and Tavares, each guy who can drive a line plus Kadri on top of it.

1st round pick? Who cares, it's a 20th-25th and highly unlikely to bring you a guy like Karlsson.
