For $10 you can get an entire twelver of Genny Red Eye and get your buzz half on, rather than just getting the night started

I promise you more great stories start “After I got my buzz half on I went out into the world and ... “ than “I started my night with a cream Ale and some pickle juice, and then things got really crazy”.

So little known fact, since Reinhart has reached a few incentives each year, his contract for the last 3 years had averaged $3.5m per. So he will be getting a raise, maybe more than you are saying here too. We will see. But $4m seems reasonable on short deal

Edit: also, why can't more nhl deals be based off agreed upon incentives. Like not the same for every player, but a reason to sign a guy to get say 50 assists or something? Or a 4th liner to get 30 points?

- Lilroot9

Incentive based contracts are what every sport needs. If I was an owner, I would demand a large scale change to the way deals are done atm. Lockout/CBA negotiations should be fun.

Matt Moulson signed a twenty five plus million dollar deal and then showed up at camp out of shape literally a year after signing it...

I wouldn't make buyouts unlimited, but I'd certainly give each team at least one or two per season. I think it would give the players added incentive to keep working hard regardless of standings or opponent, it would give teams an out for players that don't work out and I think it would strongly discourage players like Matty taking the summer off.

You want the rest of your money? Go get it. Still pay LTIR guys, but if you just suck, fell off or got lazy...sorry buddy, take a third and go play somewhere else.

If the NHLPA says they're holding out, start having tryouts...they'll come back around real quick.

I agree with most of this (I know you are just spit balling not getting into specifics). I think the buyout should give the player less payout (edit, I see you say that now, reading it again, taking a 1/3). Cause I would not want a Moulson (to use your example) to get that full money after not doing his part and working over the summer(s). Otherwise I agree to terms with a horrible team on a large deal and they just don't try until I get bought out and then go sign somewhere else and double dip on salary. I am picking apart your comments, sorry, but I agree that most (if not all) contracts should have a base salary and then incentives to get them more money. I know that can be tough if majority of team hits their goals you might go over cap, that seems to be the most unfair part. The incentives is in the contract, so the number of goals, assists, games played, whatever is based on specific contract and each team could offer different terms. I guess thinking like that.

With this, when you sign a player, they are under the understanding what you care about for them to do for your team. Like, we want you to play # number of penalty kill minutes, so they know their role right away.

Take a look at the capfriendly analysis that was done earlier. Typically, their estimates come very close to the actual contract.

CapFriendly.com shared with The Athletic an estimated bridge deal would be three years for an annual value of $3,871,650 (about $11.6 million overall). Matt Cane at pucksplusplus.com estimated a two-year deal for Reinhart would have an annual value of $4,129,312 (about $8.3 million overall).

If the Sabres go long-term with Reinhart, which they’d be wise to do if they believe the second-half of his 2017-2018 season is what he’ll do on a consistent basis, CapFriendly.com estimates his cap hit would fall between $5.5 and $6 million per season.

I've said this before, but I think there should be a system like this.

Say the Sabres are looking to sign Okposo to a contract. The contract says if he scores between 45-65 points (pro-rated over a season to account for injuries), then he gets his agreed upon $6. If he scores under that, the team can renegotiate the contract or release the player. If he scores over that, the player can renegotiate the contract, or if he's not satisfied, he can become a FA
