TB is not this (frank)ing fantasy land you think it is

I have family down there and they are getting the (frank) out of there and coming to Canada

Stop pretending you know what people want...you really have no clue

Because your family is making millions of dollars playing hockey. Sure thing.

Huge money, low taxes, sunshine, plays on one of the best teams in the league (even more so if they get Karlsson). He literally got it all in one spot which is the same that Tavares could have had but he made the crazy decision to play for the Leafs. And I'm glad he did but let's not lie to ourselves and say he wouldn't have been better off going to Tampa Bay, even if he only wanted to win.

Because if that was the only true motivator, that's what they would do. But they don't.

Some of those players aren't on Tavares' level, first of all. Secondly, they got overpaid to go to those teams. Third, the vast majority of the high end players don't do that.

- Unholy_Goalie

just curious... did you figure this all out on your own in your mom's basement or realize it while sitting beside pro-NHL players in the locker room?... 'cause man you have some insight!

6.6 million for a 40 point D. Also overpaid. Doubt he plays for the Rangers if they offered him league minimum so very unlikely he'd only play for them.
- Unholy_Goalie

This isn't about league minimum. This is about deciding factor for players. Hossa in my example got offered the same money by pitts that detroit offered. He felt he had a better chance in Detroit.

In addition, I'm trying to compare apples to apples. Tavares was offered similar contracts and he didn't care about after tax dollars because no matter how many high end cars he can afford he can only drive one at a time.

Again, you're skewing reality to be your reality.

Picking between Pittsburgh and Detroit and then eventually Chicago for Hossa is not the same as picking between Tampa Bay and Toronto.

Definitely, it's the reason all the big name UFA's signed with Arizona...

Not for the chance at a Cup, nobody wants that, but to pay less in taxes. The Leafs can only offer free-agents a chance at winning, that's why we haven't signed Vermette yet..

It actually was...

He went to Pitts...they lost to Detroit in the finals. He then went to Detroit they then lost to Pitts who was the up and coming team with stars while Detroit had Lidstrom wanting his swansong.

Then he chose Chicago with their two powerhouses in Kane and Toews who hadn't won anything yet. He helped them get over that hump. It's actually quite the comparable.

You are right... Tavares did say that with the Leafs young core, they will be competitive for a long time, and didn't need to disrupt anything on the roster... Can't say the same about Tampa

He was traded to Pittsburgh, signed with a team that went to the Finals (not the Leafs) and then signed with Chicago who had a far better all around team than the Leafs do now and also offered him the biggest paying deal at the time.

A little bit extra to get him to take the 4 year deal instead of wanting 5.

He can become a UFA at 25 or 7 years of service. Question is, how do they determine what a year of service means. If his 22 game season counts, then a bridge would have to be 3 years to keep him as an RFA by the end of it.

- Unholy_Goalie

The 6.5 should be what he’d get on a 7 year deal, based on what he’s done so far.

The point of the bridge deal is to keep him cheaper until we pass the cap crunch season.

False. Tampa Bay is already the better team, better all around, better forwards, better defense, better goaltending and their core players are all in their prime. The only disruption would be getting rid of the players that don't really matter or don't matter as much as Tavares would have mattered. Tampa Bay has just as big a window of opportunity, if not bigger considering their team is basically complete and the Leafs defense still blows.

What if he (his agent) thinks he'll be worth more than that in a couple years and doesn't want to get locked into an 8 year deal?

8 years at 6.5 AAV would be great for the Leafs but would it be great for him? Maybe at 8 years, he wants 7.5 AAV because they're buying some of his UFA years.

What would you do if the leafs won the stanley cup this coming season? Like would you just say "they got lucky for 16 games"?

But he and his agent could argue his potential and his UFA years would be worth more. At 60 points, he's already worth 5-6 million (JVR and Kane got 7 as UFAs). At 80+ points, he's worth a lot more.

lol I was thinking the same thing. He could deny they even won or just say TB is still the better team and still a better chance of winning the cup

That'd be awesomely unexpected.

What are you going to do if they don't win? Say they deserved it but just got unlucky?

roughly 12 years of "acting" dumb... I don't know but I think after a while its no longer an act...

I haven't been on HB for the entirety... but from what I can remember - in particular before the mega-ban... it was pretty dumb
