I like that deal also. Match it for Marner.
- Aaron_85

Personally, I feel like you're going to wind up paying Marner more than Nylander.

Hossa (3 times he chased his boyhood dream of a stanley cup)
Suter
Parise
Marleau technically did last year coming to the Leafs

I could also say Kovulchuk and Jagr both did when they went home to the KHL in their prime.

Guys have chosen their boyhood dreams far more than you think but it didn't fit your narrative.

- Aaron_85

Hossa didn't make the league minimum when he joined Detroit (7.4 million) and when he signed with Chicago he made huge money (7.9 million for the first several years).

Suter and Parise were both overpaid with massive upfront, guaranteed long term contracts.

Marleau was also overpaid, the Sharks gave him the save offer minus the 3rd year, he took the 3rd year for again, more money.

Kovalchuk and Jagr left for money while the KHL and the Russian ruble was strong, it backfired a little on Kovalchuk and now he's back, again, to the highest bidder, not the best team. Same with Jagr, highest bidder, not the best team.

It's not about the narrative, it's about reality. These guys are punishing their bodies and the older they get, the more they realize the money is what matters because winning is never guaranteed. If these guys all wanted to win, they'd play for Pittsburgh and they'd play for free. But guess what, they don't.

I think so too but I'm hoping they can be matching and Matthews at 10 or 11.

None of those comparables is playing with Auston Mathews!

It damn well better. Leafs won't win a defensive zone faceoff without him.
- Aaron_85

If we don't get Vermette, that will mean Tavares/Kadri/Matthews/Nylander will never learn how to win a face off.

We're comparing Nylander to Pastrnak..

Pastrnak plays with Patrice Bergeron...

Bergeron is good..

So, enlighten us... Did Kucherov sign in Tampa for 8 more years, because he felt he wouldn't get more $$ as a UFA or because he wants to win a Cup?

Shattenkirk as well, as he only wanted to play for the Rangers..
- PatC80

6.6 million for a 40 point D. Also overpaid. Doubt he plays for the Rangers if they offered him league minimum so very unlikely he'd only play for them.

Huge money, low taxes, sunshine, plays on one of the best teams in the league (even more so if they get Karlsson). He literally got it all in one spot which is the same that Tavares could have had but he made the crazy decision to play for the Leafs. And I'm glad he did but let's not lie to ourselves and say he wouldn't have been better off going to Tampa Bay, even if he only wanted to win.

When did anyone say "league minimum"?

If a player wants to play for one team, like Shattenkirk or Tavares, or Suter, or Parise or the countless other examples.. They will sign for less $$ to play for that team. Even if other teams would offer more money.

5 years makes him a UFA at the end of that deal. You want Nylander to be a UFA at 27?
- Unholy_Goalie

it should be pretty obvious that longer term would be advantageous for the team... if I'm Nylander I don't bridge longer than 5 (6 years) max.

so ... no I don't want him to be FA at that point - but what I want doesn't really matter, just like what you want to have happen doesn't really factor into any of this.

but I'm sure he'd prefer to sign in a place where he pays less taxes.

Because if that was the only true motivator, that's what they would do. But they don't.

Some of those players aren't on Tavares' level, first of all. Secondly, they got overpaid to go to those teams. Third, the vast majority of the high end players don't do that.

roughly 12 years of "acting" dumb... I don't know but I think after a while its no longer an act...

I haven't been on HB for the entirety... but from what I can remember - in particular before the mega-ban... it was pretty dumb
