six of one, half dozen of the other.

we don't burn and we're probably looking at +7M for him next year.

- Tumbleweed

Might be the same now but he'd be 1 year further away from being a UFA which means you're buying fewer UFA years.

Stamkos was doubting to join the Leafs, and that was a poop team at the time.
was an easy decision for Tavares to join Leafs.
as well, it was a very rational decision - both money and chances of winning a SC were highest in Toronto.
This in addition to personal factors.

the current CBA makes players UFAs at an earlier age (compared with previous CBAs).
you'll see more and more that players will join teams like NYR, Montreal, Chicago, Toronto, Boston etc. (big market teams) because of they always wanted to be part of those teams since they were young.

- plantheparade

Yep, Toronto has the best long term Cup window. Shannaplan is more chocolatey than Yzerplan, with more sprinkles.

Wilcard here is Mathews I think. I think they should hammer out that deal sooner than later so they have a better view for the longer term. The good thing is there was a video on TSN where they interview Orr and he said that Mathews likes Toronto and wants to stay here and win.

Frank, Im totally stoked for this up coming season

- mel_vin

The only thing preventing that is that it takes two sides to bargain. If I'm Matthews I'm not accepting anything less thatn 8 years X $11.5 million. If he has no injuries this year he will easily justify such a large salary. The only way to extend AM right now would be to pay him the money assuming that he already scored 50+ goals and 80+ points this season.

Leafs should do exactly that!

No.

So Vancouver has a better chance to win the SC than Toronto has?
Toronto has better odds at wining than Vancouver does but it doesn't mean they will.

It's about buying into a dream/concept/plan..I'm sure the same Shanaplan pitch is made to every player with the cap in mind and the entire team buying into it
- jimi james

I can picture Shanny's sales pitch; Think about how many Cups, you'll win.. Think about how everyone will chant your name... Just think about being a living legend in the city.. You'll never have to pay for a beer in this city..

Nylander: And taxes?

Shanny: frank your hat... The taxes.. Forget about the taxes... Cups, baby, Cups... Not taxes....

Please stop.
you have no clue.

Does the 22 games he played also count towards his years of service? Because to become a UFA you either have to be 27 or have 7 years of service. If that 22 game season counts as a year of service, he could become a UFA 1 year earlier and that would cost more money if you're buying those UFA years in his extension.

I don't see him signing that to be honest. RFA or not, he'll demand more, you could get him to sign that in a bridge deal thogh.

If he demands more, Mike Babcock will pull down his pants, bend over, spread his cheeks, and point around the slightly darker brown-tinged skin and explain "you're not worth what you're asking because this is where you play, the perimeter." Then he'll proceed to put his finger in his ass and explain that "this is where you need to go when you have the puck if you want the big bucks and to be a gud pro"

Sounds about right.

I'm still going with the 8 years, 7M per year.

It's basically Pastrnak's deal + 2 years of UFA and which adds 500k to compensate.

But hey, we all have no idea how it's gonna go down. It's all for fun and giggles.

Which he was. And nobody else ever has. But keep pretending like 10/2 off suit is a good hand to play.

Hossa (3 times he chased his boyhood dream of a stanley cup)
Suter
Parise
Marleau technically did last year coming to the Leafs

I could also say Kovulchuk and Jagr both did when they went home to the KHL in their prime.

Guys have chosen their boyhood dreams far more than you think but it didn't fit your narrative.
