The amount of butt hurt in the Eklund thread is hilarious.

People are raging inside that the Leaf have Matthews Nylander Marner and then got Tavares also.

It's going to be ugly for us when the Leafs don't win the cup.

- Aetherial

The Leafs probably won't win the Cup next year but if they stay the course, they will eventually.

It's just a matter of time and keeping the train on the tracks.

In five years time, Crosby will be 35, Malkin will be 36, Ovechkin will be 37, Bergeron will be 37 etc. The current contenders will be on the downswing of their careers (except Tampa Bay which is why it's terrifying that they could land Karlsson) and the Leafs core will be right in the middle of their prime years.

It's a matter of improving the defense, fitting all the important guys under the cap and making sure that in the coming years when they lose in the playoffs that the young guys learn what it takes to win.

Possibly need to upgrade the goaltending too at some point because I'm not completely sold on Andersen's playoff ability but he has a few years still on his deal to change that. But if the team in front of him plays properly (Detroit, Chicago), they can get away without having a goalie steal every game.

or they could win a cup next year. They're easily a top 5 team.

Tampa Bay, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Winnipeg, Washington.

Then Vegas, Chicago (with healthy Crawford), Boston, Minnesota, Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Jose are all close in the same territory.

I don't get this... why is the butt hurt so bad... Matthews isn't as good Laine - we all know that. Although Matthews will somehow get paid more than McDavid while Laine will sign a team friendly deal (just like Teemu did right ;-) ) ... then there's Nylander and Marner... who aren't as good as Johnny Hockey, or Bo Horvat or Mark Stone... who will also sign for less than Marner and Nylander.

Now Tavares, who I have learned since July 1st is washed up, can't win, isn't honest and just wants to cash in... even though he signed for less in Toronto than he was offered elsewhere.

So, are the Leafs players good or not - I just don't know.

and then there's the whole tax thing... I mean how can the Leafs possibly build a winner over the long haul with the tax structure in Ontario.... its unpossible.

actually this is encouraging... good to see the boys working on skills that they can rely on when the regular season ends... when Bergevin gets canned ... there will no doubt be several of them who will looking for work.

Last years Leafs maybe yeah..

But they just added an elite center who's winger is Marner. The offense is vastly improved from last seasons. The defence will be better, but its not as bad as you make it out to be.

caps are going to miss gruaber during the regular season. maybe pitts steps up, a little.

boston is close, but i think they have a modest decline. i'm not sold on columbus. the rest of the 'close' teams are likely to decline. not really close.

And they lost 47 goals in JVR and Bozak and all the SO wins Bozak provided. The Leafs overachieved in points last year and there's no guarantee they'll have more points this year just because they added Tavares because the defense is still weak. The Leafs ROW ranking last year was lower than their point total ranking.

You have zero evidence to suggest the defense will be better. They did little to nothing to improve it.

Everybody is likely to decline except the Leafs, the team who had led the league in SO wins and lost Bozak, the SO specialist.

adding tavares, johnsson, kap vs. martin, bozak, jvr, komarov will improve team defense. which wasn't terrible last year.
