I’ll take Crosby over both in a game 7 .... - Redmile247
Me too as anyone would that has brain but the best thing is watching all the Leaf fans fall all over the themselves trying to back this silly post. McJesus is a generational talent and the first one since Sid. Matthews is a great player but not on that level. |

This whole thing just exposes the huge flaw in the Cap system. How is it fair that you have a no tax state offering less to a player equalling a higher price anywhere else. Defeats the cap principle. They need to fix this. Florida and anywhere else with no tax or less tax are getting an unfair advantage over other teams. As well, lets not forget the nightmare the Canadian teams have to deal with exchange rate and really high taxes. Canadian cup drought....wonder why. Develop your players...have one or two years window to win and then you lose these guys because of money. Remember contracts are in US$.
****Kucherovs contract is 11mil(equivalent) if he were anywhere else - KANADIAN
Well do you think that's really the league's fault? I get that it sucks for Canadian teams, but what else can you do? Should they also account for poopy weather? A Canadian team just (finally) signed the biggest FA on the market. I know it doesn't happen often, but there are lots of teams and 3 out of 7 Canadian teams have like the worst GM's in the league. Odds on guys signing here ain't good. |

I suppose you're right but if he really wanted to win shouldn't he have taken less than $11 million per year, because you know, he wants to win. As opposed to all the other hockey players that don't care either way - mattmoulson
I dont know if your offered $13M and you settle for taking $11M on a team that has a great chance to win is that not taking less money? I think the hard pill to swallow here is that the Leafs are finally relevant and a favorite to win it all. Dont let the leaf hate hide the facts. Anyway I'm not gonna argue about this cause its pointless. As far as Mathews being better than McDavid that's a far reach |

See I think the UFA/RFA drives up more the 2nd and 3rd line guys, like Tyler Johnson and Palat in Tampa. I think the top guys get top money no matter if they are RFA or UFA so I do think its comparable. I think they look at the guys making the most money and putting up the most points and want that money or more. - Kucherovski
Totally agree with your sentiments re: 2nd and 3rd line guys (but I don't think Johnson or Palat are overpaid either). |

We do disagree, I think Johnson is easily replaceable therefor overpaid at $5m per year |

They all want to win! ..as in jack in Buffalo. .if he didn't think their plan was going to be good? Or they weren't going the right direction? ..maybe he would of signed a bridge deal?. Or ask for a trade? ..he believed in Buffaloes future. .and with dalhen now.. ..the 10mil he signed I'm sure will be great a value going forward. .and I'm drunk ..have a great day guy's |

Yes it is taking less money but you could make the case he could have just as easily won on the Sharks. He took less money because wanted to play for the Leafs. But this whole look how great this guy is because he took less money and he's only the 2nd highest paid player in the league because he wants to win thing is kind of a stretch. And I'm also pretty sure any money he left on the table in California he'll make up for in endorsements pretty easily in Toronto. |

Then why do players sign in LA and NY...same high taces. Im from NY trust me our taxes suck. Someone posted the tavares tax chart and ny and tpronto were close so its not like its just canada - Flexingtheshaft
Canada is a socialist country. Trust me the taxes are higher. Everything is more expensive. We pay $5 a gallon for gas. If you give Kuch $9.5 in Ottawa for instance, his money after taxes does not go nearly as far as it does in Florida. Ive lived in Florida for 10 years and now in Ottawa. Believe me I know what I am talking about. The players now what I am talking about too. He would want 11mil in Ottawa just to make up for this. A Canadian NHL team owner is paying 11mil for that 9.5mil contract after his exchange rate. NOT FAIR! |

lol really? I mean when I hear "overpaid" I think "I would not trade for that guy unless the other team eats some salary or throws in a sweetener" (for example Bobby Ryan).
I doubt Tampa will have to do either of those things with Johnson. If he needs to be sacrificed for cap space they may not get full value for him in a deal but it's not like they will have to eat a bad contract or retain salary or throw in picks/prospects to get it done. |

Lol you don't really account for cost of living in Ottawa vs New York though. A condo in Manhattan is gonna cost you more than anywhere in Canada. Think you're going off the deep end there a bit bud, you're not the only Canadian in the crowd. |

The Lightning have been around for 25 years, the Panthers who knows how long so why now is this "NOT FAIR"? Tampa also has warm weather during the hockey season, Tampa does not have the media pressure as other big market teams so maybe there is more to players wanting to go to Tampa, LA, SJ than just the 41 games Tampa gets a break on their income tax. |

What should they do? Adjust cap on a case by case scenario so that the cap hit per team balances across the league. Totally doable and the fair thing to do. |

Lol I've seen maybe 1 or 2 Leaf fans agree in here. The other few I've seen have actually been from other fan bases.
95% of Leaf fans are well aware McDavid is the better player. We aren't stupid.. this is Ek trolling since he has nothing better to talk about now that Kucherov signed a new deal and squashed all the Karlsson trade rumors. |

Matthews will sign the same contract as Tavares and it will catch up to them in 5 years. He is super talented but I just see him a tier down from McDavid, Crosby & Malkin.
I think a comparable in terms of impact would be Mackinnon but Matthews will be taking up +$4M more against the cap. |

Still doesn't make Winnipeg more appealing than Tampa or Santa Clara... Anyway, I don't think that the money plays as big of a role as you think it does. It's not like all the superstars flocked to Sunrise FL...when was the last time they signed a big UFA? |

Way too many other factors. Kucherov, lets use a rough example and rough numbers on why I think this is being blown way out of proportion. Lets say his salary is $5m per year, they get paid per game so for 82 games that's $60,976 per game. If 41 of those games he only gets federal taxes taken out at 35% he gets $39,634 in his pocket. If the other 41 games he gets taxes taken out at 55% he gets $27,439 in his pocket per game. The difference is $12,195 per game so multiply that by the 41 game difference and it's $500,000. I'm not sure it's making a HUGE impact to be honest compared to cost of living, weather, pressure, just general way of life. |
