Ok, let’s take defenseman......Staal Girardi Klein McD......how’d they look approaching 30 and beyond?

Fair point. EK is an animal unto himself. There aren't too many players in the league that are his caliber. However, the Rangers are in rebuild mode acquiring prospects rather than trading them away for the hot commodity. No guarantee EK signs with the team he is traded to. Wait until next year when every team will throw $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ at him and make our case.

To be fair, comparing those guys to Karlsson is like comparing Glass, Martin, Rinaldo to Crosby

Exactly the reason I don't want to trade for him. I think Melnyk won't find a buyer possibly until the TDL, if then. Bizarre scenario with the top D on the market with no buyers right now since no team wants to dump a boatload of prospects to take on someone that might walk at the end of the season.

Yup, and if the Rangers were looking like one of the favorites to win a cup, go all in for him baby, but where they are at now, if he walked after a year, the Rangers would be so (frank)ed.

These are forward stats, those guys peak earlier than D and transition from goal scorers to putting up assists.
D mature later and have a longer shelf life putting up points. Karlsson's foot injuries could quite possibly come back to hurt him later in that contract. Any player of his caliber is going to be looking for a really long contract on a contender, and I can't blame him for wanting max $$$$$$$$$ AND a shot(or 2) at the Cup. Don't see it happening here in the next few years, although I would really like this rebuild to last until this year's TDL.

- Fenrir

Not only are they forward stats but pretty sure scoring has declined league wide over the years also. I think it’s hard enough to tell who is a contender next season let alone in 2-3 years. Signing for 8 years, maybe he sees a future with this team? Not giving up the farm. Could be combo of a couple roster players and prospects.

Karlsson was given permission to talk contract with other teams. The trade part only comes after he’s agreed to new deal with that team

Nobody is trading for him without already negotiating an extension. That much is a known fact. And at this point, I don’t see him starting season with Ottowa.

Yeah but if the Sens we’re willing to take what brooks proposed - Buchnevich, Georgiev and Pionk or Lundkvist plus the first-rounder, I would make that trade in a heartbeat. Especially if Bobby Ryan wasn’t part of the deal. More times than not in these types of trades the team who is trading for a superstar in their prime always gets the better end of the stick. And tbh I don’t see any of those players coming anywhere near the type of player Karlsson is.

I'd rather take the risk of nothing happening with him and seeing if we could get him in FA. It's only money and we still have our picks and assets.

Brooks is never right. No way Ottawa is taking that much money back. They are on a shoe string budget. From most of what I have read out there they want picks and good prospects.

Oh yeah (frank) him, it’s just nice to day dream.

You think that would be too much salary with buch and Georgiev making about 800k and pionk at 925k that’s only 2.5M between 3 roster players.

that much money??? 4 youngsters on ELC's, for the grand total of ~$3.5M per. Can't get players cheaper than that pal

I’m not comparing any of them to EK, they’re not even in the same discussion. The point I’m making is it doesn’t matter what position you play or who you are, right around 30/31 you start to decline. Will EK still be good? Yes. But will he be having the 82, 78, 71 seasons were paying him to have? No. He will start around there, down to 60,s, down to 50’s, likely with 40-45 towards the last few years of the deal.

One thing i just thought of, if Ottawa plans on trading Ryan and Karlsson, and obviously wouldn’t be adding or taking on high salaries, wouldn’t they be in danger of missing the cap floor? They may actually have to keep Ryan. It’s a serious thing to not be able to do that and who’s to say they can even get players with this Melnyk guy. That org completely effed themselves in so many ways
