Pretty much. But is 8 years at 7.5 an overpay? to me he is worth that to the FLYERS. - J35Bacher
Overall no. He'll be overpaid for a few years but likely will be drastically underpaid for most of the contract.

To me I would rather lean that way instead of going 6 years at 6.5. See him continue to ascend and then have to pay him another big contract that goes to 10-11 million.
That's just me.

As good as Provy is I dont think the words "mirror Daugherty" can be used . - opeth_pa

It's not at all a bad idea. Here is the deal. Hextall has his salary cap charted out for a number of years. They already know pretty much what they'll have to pay players in the near future, what they can afford and how much they have to play with.

It's not just about money. Doughty was legitimately one of the top defenseman in the league as a 2nd year player. Provorov is not at that level. |

Until this year his 2nd professional season 16 goals and 59 points were career highs. He was a Norris candidate as well wasn't he ? And shortly after led them to a cup. |

cant say I remember how solid LA was back in 2009, I know Drew had 59 points, monster year. For the next 3 years he went 40, 36 and 37 points. Provy has started 30 and 41. When I think of the D side, I am sure Drew was better but it cant be by much, Provy is very good in his own end. I do agree Drew was better first 2 years but I still think inflation plays, the Cap is way up and Provy is a #1. I would have no issue going 7 mil 8 years, I think that would be fair. If I am provy, I would do a 2 year contract with the idea of getting a big time 8 year deal after.

I don't think any athlete who plays a physical contact sport wants a short term deal. It only takes on injury to end a career. I think athlete like having the security that if something happens they have money coming. |

I think the idea that most have is to sign him for a deal that overpays him now in order to save in later years. - MJL

I believe his point was they're not comparable. Provy is less today than doughty was during his extension but has the potential to be as good and potentially more if he keeps rising. So it's an overpay st the beginning and a bargain at the end |

For a 20 year old he's incredible. Not tops in the league yet, but getting there won't take long. Maybe this upcoming season, the following one at the latest.
imho - Scoob
I agree, but I also don't think that means he gets paid like one just yet. He doesn't seem like a guy that thinks he deserves to be paid like a top defender yet either considering he thinks they lost the series because of him |

Imho that's a poor measuring stick as there is too much emphasis on points with that award. That Ghost got votes and Provorov didn't tells me all I need to know about those who vote on that award.
I don't care one iota how many AS games a player plays in. AS games are meaningless folly. - Scoob
Doughty played on the top PP unit, which inflated his points, value, and ultimately the AAV |

I agree with you, but those are bargaining chips that both teams and agents use.
(still think he's getting 8x8 imho)

I don't disagree, so what would have Dougherty's contract for 7x8 be worth in todays NHL?
Cap in 2011 was around 64, today it is around 79.5, call it a 20% increase. The same 7 mil cap hit is worth about 20% less today . So Drew was 10-11% of the total cap back then, if Provy had a 7 mil hit now, he would be about 9% of the total cap. |

I honestly think hes the type of guy that would go below market value because "money is just money" help the team win. |

His value today is in the 5-6 range imo. But he will outplay that back half of the contract I firmly believe |
