I would say that the bottom 6 guys that were signed were bad, not all but they stand out.

Stastny, Reider and JVR was good value. JVR 5 years is really good IMO, the money doesn't matter that much at that term.

With the Bing Devils sucking last year, I don't understand not signing some AHL guys, like Lorito, Terry, Agostino, Macdonald, Wotherspoon. Try to help Blackwood actually be good by having a good team in front of him. Or guys that can at least score in the AHL. Hopefully they bring back Appleby.

I don't see how we can't take a run at Karlsson. He is a elite talent and the right age for the Devs. So the question is what can we offer & what is off limits?

Personnel I would think are untouchable are Hall, Nico, Palms, Vatanen, Butcher, & Schneider. Butcher and Schneider may be available, less so Schneider because finding a true #1 goalie these days is almost impossible. I would hate to give up Butcher, but if push comes to shove you may have to make the call.

In order to get Karlsson, I wouldn't be surprised if we went with a package of (this is a complete guess as I am not a GM lol):

Devils overpayment IMO. And by quite a margin.

That Ryan contract is worth Ottawa giving up a 1st and 2nd to get rid of. We do not have any crap contracts to give back to them: most of our players are worth nearly what they're being paid, thankfully.

call me crazy, but I feel that's too much, and I'm not willing to give the farm for this guy. Yes, he's great.. but is he going to win us a Cup? probably not. It's not like we're dumping the franchise for McDavid. Karlsson is awesome, but he's still an offensive dman and not a center. We're still missing another big piece or 2 up front. While it's great we developed guys last year, getting a top 10 pick would've been more useful going forward. idk. we gotta hit it big in free agency, trades, or find another "Elias" without having a top 15 pick..

If that was the cost, serios pass. If you have to take on that Ryan contract the ask should be a lot less. Especially if Karlsson is a free agent in a year.

Taking Ryan's contract back seriously lessens the trade return for Ottawa. For NJ it'd start with something like Severson, Bratt, a 1st, and maybe an additional prospect. I just feel like whenever there is a big star player like this who everyone in the league knows wants to get traded, the return is always underwhelming, and that's NOT including Ottawa sending a terrible terrible contract in Ryan the other way. Giving Ottawa two first round picks plus two great young players/prospects is the price without Ryan being involved IMO.
