Gonna love the biased responses after JJ shows how awful he is |

Although i hope JJ proves everybody wrong and is a decent defenseman for the Penguins, his playoff performances are way to limited to say it's a strength of his. Fact remains he's never been out of the first round. - cap1681
Also trying to combine 4 small samples into 1 slightly larger small sample to justify a signing when there are significantly larger samples of data that show he is bad is just plain ignorance. |

Look man, I know you're trying to be positive that's a good stance to take, but you can't expect any kind of sports writer to not point out when a team has made a bad decision. - Rinosaur
First, he's not a sports writer, he's a blogger.
Second, it's surprising that the fact that Johnson was at 57% D zone starts in CBUS has never been mentioned here to help contextualize stats. |

He's not being a Tortorella guy at all. JR shouldn't have made any comments. Doesn't make me any less of a Pens fan, but he just shouldn't have. Now, could Torts have responded differently? LOL yeah, but still, he's right to be peeved for someone not in his organization to question his motives for decisions. - Rinosaur
Ruth was asked a direct question about whether JJ being a healthy scratch down the stretch was a concern. What was he supposed to say?
Torts is a classless, insecure moron with a Napoleon complex. |

1. He is a sports writer.
2. Wrong. The zone start stats from Hockey Reference are not valid. They ignore neutral zone starts and otf starts. |

Anyone think it’s a bit of a waste of the organizations time and money having Sully and Gonchar watch hours of tape on a player? All they have to do is go to one of the thousands of links you guys post to see Johnson’s “advanced” statistics. Almost like these coaches don’t know that’s how you scout a player. - Grinder47
No. Because everyone who looks at charts and graphs also watches the games. |

Yeah cool too bad he is one of the worst in defending the blue line or defending in his own zone.
Out of the 57 he ranks
57th in CF% RelTM (-3.17... Girardi is 56th at -2.81)
57th in FF% RelTM (-3.44... Orpik is 56th at -2.88)
57th in xGF% RelTM (-3.61... Orpik is 56th at -2.31)
57th in GF% RelTM (-6.05... Girardi is 56th at -3.84)
THE worst impact defender.
57 defensemen have played 10,000 minutes since 2007-08. Jack Johnson ranks
CF% 55th
rel CF% 57th
xGF% 54th
rel xGF% 57th
He brings offense...
5v5 pts/60 49th
It was just one bad year...
Keep defending the signing though |

He's not. Doesn't have press credentials, doesn't have access, and possesses 10th grade level writing skills.

It's not wrong, it's true. You could look it up. They might not tell the whole story (stats have a way of doing that), and you might not like the story it tells, but that's a different story. I mean, we used to hear that Marcel Goc was a third line center because his stats were skewed by D zone starts.

I hope, but not holding breath, that he pulls a Scuderi and comes into his own in early 30's.
73.5% outlet pass rate is pretty damn good when you consider how the Pens play. Hopefully the Pens can get back to being possession darlings so JJ doesn't have to play in own end alot haha |

Being last among a pretty special group (guys who have forged long NHL careers while logging big minutes) doesn't make you "THE worst impact defender," it makes you either the tallest midget or the shortest giant, either of which is likely worth $3 mil a year in today's NHL. - hardnosed
Yeah that's a great point. For as terrible as the guy is he's kept a long time regular spot in a position that only dresses 6 a night. Not alot of dmen in the history of the NHL can say they have had a long career like his so far... Actually most of the dmen in the history NHL can't say that. |

Get ready to be told that zone exits and getting the puck to a bevy of talented forwards quickly and accurately suddenly doesn't matter. |

Ryan Wilson is nitpicking and is so bitter about the JJ signing that suddenly Tortorella is a good guy....the same coach that left Kessel off the USA roster.
Get a grip. It's getting ridiculous now Wilson. F Tortorella. - Barnaby36

Well, and it comes down to usage. If a guy like Girardi or Orpik or Johnson is getting 24 minutes a night, your team could probably do better. If they're getting 18 or so, they can be veteran assets to your team, and JJ's salary is much more reasonable (half) than those other two guys, for a guy whose skating isn't an issue as he ages. |

You can filter it on Corsica but trust me it is a list of fairly bad D men.
Russell, Gorges, Schenn, Nick Schultz, Alzner, Streit, Bieksa, Orpik, Girardi, Coburn, Daley, Hainsey, Phaneuf, Polak, Carle, Jackman, Gilbert, etc.
