Habs should keep their cap space and only use it to sign one year deals for guys that can be flipped at the TDL. They can also use it if some teams are in poop and in need to shed cap space (rarely happen).

No need to waste money on long term deals for UFA's, the team is in reset mode for a couple years.

The quicker they realize or admit to that the sooner they can get back on the right path

Vancouver sat on assets like the Sedins forever, a rebuild would suggest against that.. they could of sped it up... Detroit has a very nice pool of young players, not sure what you're talking about there

You think Detroit will contend in 5 years?

Well that's the problem. Something decisive has to be done while their assets still have value. Pacioretty walking at the end of next year or signing 8×8 is a lose lose.

Ok, so how long do you give a high drafted to make a positive impact to a winning team in the NHL?

Forwards take 3-4years to just become somewhat responsible defensively even if they can score out of the gates. Most D men need 2 years junior/Ahl, then 300 NHL games.

These things take time. There’s only maybe 1 or 2 guys a year that can do it as an 18 yr old rookie.

I agree and it shouldn't be that hard finding a taker on one of the better goal scorers in the league and even get a decent return for him... Gotta think he's waiting until after the FA dust has settled to make that move now, after JVR and co. have all signed somewhere

Matthews scored 40 his rookie year, Laine didn't do so bad either and there's plenty more examples of 18 year olds coming in and doing well... What you're failing to understand is I'm not asking for a championship team right away, I'm asking for steps in the right direction that will lead to progress and a team to be optimistic about

no, not unless they find a top end defenseman and a goalie to replace Howard as the starter.

They really wanted to address the D at this draft but they couldn't pass up both players that fell to them...

Cholowski, McIsaac and Lindstrom are a nice starting foundation, need to add a true #1, I'm sure it will be the goal going into the next draft...
