It's just a number. It really doesn't matter and as long as it helps him play his best it's fine.

Let's pretend they beat Boston then get swept by Tampa Bay. They still didn't really go anywhere and they still have a bunch of UFAs walk for nothing. It's the same thing.

And yeah, if this year they had two or three more picks at the draft, they'd better off right now. People were busting their loads on trading down to get Sandin because it meant an extra 3rd round pick and Dubas "got his guy". Just imagine if he had another 1st round pick and a couple more 2nds what he could have done. Maybe he trades up and gets one of those really amazing D prospects.

I doubt that would've changed, unless Dubas traded all 6 of those picks for 1.. Talk about wasting assets..

Or if he just uses all 6 picks and gets a bunch of good prospects.

Either way, it's better than having a bunch of career year UFAs walk for nothing with only a 1st round exit to show for it.

The pick Montreal made for Plekanec looks like a pretty good pick too.

It would have been interesting to see the Leafs young players like Kapanen and Johnsson get even more ice time in the playoffs. They were playing better than the UFAs they kept. Just more ice time for the young guys would have been great.

Again, it's not impossible. Logan Couture was drafted 9th overall after San Jose traded Toskala to the Leafs for 13th overall. They traded up. They turned a back-up into their #1 center.

I'm not saying it happens every day or that it's easy but these are the types of swindlings you want your team to have going in your favor. Boston turned Kessel into Seguin (2nd overall) and Hamilton (9th overall). They pissed them away but the point still stands; if you're smart with your assets, you can get yourself very far ahead of the game.
