Wrong. Again. Shockingly.
The Leafs are 1 of 6 teams he's talking to. By literal (frank)ing definition, the odds are good. Tied with 5 other teams and ahead of 25, who are at 0%.
Doesn't mean he'll sign here, he probably won't, but the odds are still good. - GreatGigInTheSky
Nowhere near equal when you look at what money he can make in certain cities compared to others. Also not equal when you look at some teams offering him a chance to win and others still having major holes in their lineup.
I know you want to bullpoop yourself into believing it's equal, but it's really not. |

Being a citizen and being a resident are different. If he's in Long Island or Tampa Bay or wherever else for more than 6 months (hint: he would be to play a whole NHL season), he pays taxes where he resides. That's what residency means. Playing for the Islanders, he's a US resident and he's not paying Canadian taxes. - Unholy_Goalie

Three part question;
Are the Leafs one of the 6 teams, he is interested in?
If so, wouldn't that mean that they do have a chance to sign him?
Lastly, do you honestly think that Tavares is that concerned about income taxes, that it is the only thing he would base his decision on?

From firsthand experience, I can assure you that you are incorrect.
Tax specialists advise that if you want to avoid Canadian taxes, when you move to the US, you need to make the appearance that you have done it permanently - i.e., severed all ties and have no intentions of ever returning. This includes closing all Canadian bank accounts, selling off all property (including secondary residences).
As far as I know, JT lives in Canada in the offseason.
Thanks to the tax treaties between the US and Canada, he would pay the majority of his taxes in the States. Canada would then look at how much he would have paid in Canada, and JT would be required to submit the difference to Revenue Canada.
Tl,dr: Uggie has no idea what he is talking about. |

You are discrediting the teams that don't get an interview.. Pittsburgh, Vegas, Nashville and the Panthers all have better chances to sign him then we do.
As you may or may not know, George McPhee is the dragon whisperer.. So, make of that what you will.

Let me just add one further thought:
Anyone who thinks that you can bang a couple of numbers into a calculator on TSN.ca and figure out what your tax rate is has quite obviously never filed U.S. tax returns. |

good post.
except the u.s./canada tax treaty has special provisions for athletes which actually makes the bold more complex.
part of the reason any generic tax calculator on the interwebz probably has a fairly large margin for error. |

This is Canada, they should go across the boarder if they do not want to pay taxes. |
