Tsn aav calculator for tavares is pretty interesting. After taxes he wouldn't take home a whole lot more on an 8 year deal with the islanders than he would on a 7 year deal with the leafs and the difference between the leafs and the no state tax teams like Tampa and Dallas could probably be made up in endorsements. |

I think they did ok with Hainsey - not great, but at $3 million serviceable 4-5 guy. I think Montreal did not so okay with Alzner and Petry, $5 million a piece for two stiffs that helped sink the team into the sewer. Point is, very easy to overpay for Meh- dmen. Stars get paid, make good deals on the supporting cast, rinse and repeat. - winsix
While I agree with your premise, if we got Tavares, we'd be spending a lot on our C's, so we should probably save some for the D. |

Domi will score 5 empty net goals this year to reach double digits. And he will have a 12.3% winning percentage on face offs.

I dont get this?
Lebrun and Matheson have been writing about the NHL for a long time.
even if you take a quick look at Wards stats.. he hasnt had a season above NHL avg sv% since 2011 ...like holy F.
He seems like one of the worst options. have they even looked at where the Canes have ranked in goale sv% the past decade?
is it just Ward is a gud pro and therefor a good option in these guys minds?

Agree with @ByScottPowers that Cam Ward is a good possibility for the Blackhawks, in fact I'd say a strong one

Cam Ward would be ideal. He still thinks like a starter which he's been pretty much his whole NHL life but he has the personality to take a subordinate role to Crawford. He could easily play three-four weeks if Crawford was out. |

8 million dollars is a lot more.

Tampa Bay could offer him 70 million (44 million net) and he'd still make more than if the Leafs offered him 84 million (39 million net). Even though Tampa Bay has to move salary, their cap hit would be lower than the Leafs. Would the Leafs go into McDavid territory (14 AAV, 98 million, 46 million net)? Is it worth it? |

Agree on all but Myers - Leafs can sign him as a UFA next year, won't be nearly as expensive as Karlsson or Doughty - winsix
Won't have space to sign him next year. The point is if they trade for Myers/Mason, it would be cheap because of the salary dump attached and then there is 9.6mil coming off the books next year to give to MaMar |

If Hawks want any intel on Ward they can ask Ricky Olczyk, Eddie's brother, who was assistant GM in Carolina for years. Ricky can pass on the info to Eddie O who can pass it along to GM Stan Bowman
i would hope the info they get is... He is a great guy, one of the best but cant stop a breach ball so if you are looking to tank..he is your man |

Kind of makes you wonder if the NHL should not be adopting a cap system with tax differences built in. If Tampa can offer lower cap hit contracts that still pay more it doesn't seem like a level playing field.

And then some. NHL players have barely scratched the surface with endorsement money. Michael Jordan was making more in endorsements (significantly more) than his salary. An he basically has been retired for almost 20 years. In 2015 he made more money than the entire NBA

It usually benefits non-traditional hockey markets so I doubt Bettman does anything about it because it creates "parity". |
