I'm in my 50's but that's not old, it's middle age lol. I just became a grandfather three months ago though, so I may reconsider my stance on it??

Yeah, you need to. Once you can join AARP in America (50 years old) and get their billions of senior discounts, you’re old.

This is exactly it. We wouldn't have an argument if UG wasn't so adamant that the chances for the Leafs to get Tavares is so totally minuscule.
We all know its a long shot. We just think he's making too big a deal out of how poopty their chances actually are.

According to him the only thing Toronto offers is money, nothing else. But they don't offer money either cause taxes.

- Thecakeisalie

And a lot of you are adamant that he's willing to leave money on the table to join a high pressure situation on an inferior team because he has an unstoppable childhood dream to play for the Leafs with zero proof. One of these two arguments isn't rooted in logic or reason and it definitely isn't mine.

And theirs isn’t either. Playing for the home team is a HUGE dream. I had it with the Wings before a nasty injury ended my collegiate career. I knows dozens of people who did go to play for/tried out for the team they cheered for growing up.

And if you picked the Red Wings over another team and lost 12 million dollars in the process, you'd be crazy. And not many great players with huge earning power make crazy decisions like that. I can't think of any off the top of my head who have.

Only one I can think of was Fedorov taking a pay cut and going to the Ducks in 2003. I get you. But he could easily make up a lot of that in endorsements and tax workarounds at the same time.

Doesn't mean that dream exists unless you can prove it which nobody has been able to yet.
- Unholy_Goalie

In that case, there goes every argument about Tavares you've ever made. You can't prove any of the crap you say he cares about that you've been spewing.
We know he loves hockey and was a Leafs fan growing up. It's a very simple leap of logic that he dreamed of being a Leaf.

It's a big assumption because playing for the Leafs has big costs attached to it both financially and emotionally. He has to give up money, privacy and join a team that isn't as good as the others who are trying to sign him.

- Unholy_Goalie
Your arguments here are as big of assumptions on your part as anything you say about me. You have no more idea about how much JT is willing to deal with a lack of privacy than I know how much he values tax havens.

He's free to go where he wants, why would he settle for "decent" when he can have the best salary and the best team? Because of a childhood fantasy that everybody hopes he has?
- Unholy_Goalie

Now you're just splitting hairs with my words. The Leafs have a "decent" chance to win a cup in the near future even without Tavares. With him, they have an even better shot.

Yes, Tampa would be considered a better chance to win, but then, they didn't win this year and most considered them better favorites than Washington, so clearly these things are hard to predict. He could sign with Tampa and have them fail to win next year and then fall into a cap crunch where they need to unload some of their players. They might not win his whole contract. Only focusing on what team has the supposed "best odds of winning" when other teams have a legit shot too seems to be something someone would do that had the mentality of a 10 year old.

But Long Island offers him more money, he doesn't have to move, the team is run by people he can actually trust and respect. It's relatively quiet to Toronto too.

Not in his prime and not after already winning many Cups.

PK Subban plays in Nashville. I see him in commercials in Canada all the time. Endorsements will be there regardless.

You’ll get a lot more endorsements for a market like Toronto while being the face of it over a Dallas or Tampa.

You can cut it any way you like, he walks away with more money playing in Tampa Bay or Long Island than he does in Toronto if all 3 teams offer him 11 years over 7 or 8 years.
- Unholy_Goalie

Yes he does, even with a 20% up-lift due to currency conversion.

To be fair, Tanner proved that the Capitals were barely a playoff team and sheer luck won them the cup.

You're either delusional or full of poop UG.

Only one or two people on here have actually predicted he'll play in Toronto.
Most that are arguing with you agree he'll probably stay in Long Island. Most will also admit a few other teams like Tampa might be a possibility.

Most are simply saying there are some reasons why he might consider the Leafs, but that it's a long shot. What exactly about this stance do you disagree with?

Enough to make up the 12 million dollar difference? I don't think so.

If he takes a deal from Tampa Bay and gets 5 million in endorsements, he'd need 17 million in endorsements just to break even in Toronto.

And nobody has shown actual numbers of what the difference in endorsements would be. Didn't work with Stamkos, why would it work with Tavares?

Yeah. Tanner is always good for some interesting reading. My favorite blogger on here, even though I usually disagree with him and/or think he's actually trolling.

Maybe it doesn’t equal the same amount but it covers enough to not matter. It’s just something you can only speculate on. All this entire thing is is speculation. He’s going to the Red Wings damnit. 7 year deal, $2.25 mil AAV
