i looked up Tavares's career stats.

He's good, but not even close to what i expect Marner and Matthews career will be.

Pass. Give me Stastny for half the price.

PS Before someone mentions Stamkos, he was going back to a very good team situation with Tampa...if the Isles were a contender and their building situation wasn't so (frank)ed up I wouldn't bet on the Leafs...but I like the Leafs chances of contending a lot better than the Isles over the course of the contract...

I think the saving grace here is the exchange rate. If he wants to live in Canada year round Leafs offering him 9 mil US (152 mil CND) should seal the deal.

He ain't getting 152 mil US a year from Tampa, Boston etc.

I wonder if at a certain point the extra cash one way or another doesn't matter as much as the situation. Is it worth 8 years guaranteed instead of 7 to play in two different arenas for three years for a bubble team? I don't know, depends on the kind of guy Tavares is...but I remember the great Red Wings teams, lots of guys were going there and it was obviously because they had a chance to win a Cup, many of them said as much...Marleau just decided he liked the Leafs chances...

I kind of can't bet against Shanny at this point. Too much stuff that never goes right for the Leafs has happened since we went through the vortex into bizarro world Leafdom. And this is the first time since forever that the Leafs are actually a really good situation and sanely run organization for a hometown star to jump into. I ask myself, does Tavares really want to spend the rest of his career in a very uncertain situation in NY?

I remember Lou saying, if I ever want to talk someone into something, I'm sending Brendan...so if I have to lay bragging rights on the line, I'm gonna go ahead and say the Leafs get Tavares. We'll see...

I was also one of those ppl that believed we were gonna win the mcdavid sweepstakes. I was off by a year.

I thought we had a good chance at stamkos as well, but looking at the leafs now and where they were when meeting with stamkos, I think Tavares is an actual possibility.

Also this...getting Matthews, and Marner and Nylander showing they are legit players changes a lot. Even the Marlies changes things a bit. TML looks pretty serious from top to bottom right now.

I honestly think once you get to that point money isn’t an issue anymore. The guy is going to get paid and will be set up for life. Where does he want to live, raise a family and be close to at the end of the day will play the biggest part.

Maybe he loves it in New York that he doesn’t want to leave or wants to come home. I think those probably weigh more then the money he’ll be getting.

Could be wrong though. Maybe 100 million US in the next 8-10 years is all he cares about.

Edit: I know all players get paid in usd but maybe he is all about the money.

But he could get 9 mil US per from any team pay less taxes and still live in Canada half the year and enjoy the exchange rate.

That was like a long, terrible dream.

$25m cap space is misleading.

JT might be exploring options but IMO its NYI 1st then onto SJ next. They are built for now & an easier division to come out of. The Leafs need a minute munching shutdown D man more than JT. Who or when that is tough to say but its gotta be a priority. That all said things are looking bright while the process plays out. With the Habs/Sens being so inept & years away from being a threat along with FLA being closer its good times ahead for all of you fans GL
