Let me just add one further thought:

Anyone who thinks that you can bang a couple of numbers into a calculator on TSN.ca and figure out what your tax rate is has quite obviously never filed U.S. tax returns.

Or been an accountant, or gone to an H&R Block, or heard of offshore accounts..

Leafs are gonna open an "in trust" account for JT in the Cayman Islands

This Canada, they should go across the boarder if they do not want to pay taxes.

Three part question;

Are the Leafs one of the 6 teams, he is interested in?
If so, wouldn't that mean that they do have a chance to sign him?
Lastly, do you honestly think that Tavares is that concerned about income taxes, that it is the only thing he would base his decision on?

- PatC80

Ill handle this via UGenius logic

1. No, it was a courtesy by his agents. He probably wasnt even at the supposed meeting.

2. No, taxes, 10 year old mentality

3. It's the only thing he cares about. JT's priorites are Taxes, not the Leafs, and Taxes.

the money he'd lose playing here is too much and this is a guy who has been severly underpaid for years.

i really hope his family/fiance are wanting to be in toronto. its our only hope.

- systemtool

It wouldn't surprise me if he really did want to play here, but it would just cost him too much to do it.

I know they can't make it part of the official negotiations, but you have to figure he would have a good job for life if he signed and there will still be a lot of years left after his career. Maybe that helps?

One thing I have always wondered:

Would MLSEL like to push the envelope on the CBA cap curcumvention provisions by offering contracts to endorse Bell and Rogers?

Keep in mind I am not a lawyer, but if I recall correctly, the CBA basically says something like this would have to pass the smell test - it doesn’t actually ban the practice.

Take a look at the highest celebrity endorsement for a US telecommunications company in the US - and match it.

I think there was something in the CBA like that.

I also remember something saying they cleared the Stamkos proposal with the league first because of the endorsement promises.

You offer him the endorsement contracts immediately after he announces his retirement from the NHL.

Does that mean his salary is subject to 2011 tax rates?
