We're full, plus it sucks in the islands. Go north instead.

Yes. Northwest BC is beautiful. Housing is affordable, no traffic jams, unless 7 vehicles count as a traffic jam?
I live 12 minutes from where i work, 15 in winter time.
Once LNG is announced jobs will be aplenty up here and most that want too work are already working.
Plus, fishing is awesome.

Yeah, they gave me pretty generous severance, enough to pay the bills for 6 months and I'm looking to changing careers and getting into the trades like plumbing or carpentry and am looking for labourer jobs in those fields to work my way to becoming an apprentice.

See if you can get into electrical, cleaner, safer, ....i know of one young guy got screwed on a plumber apprentice by a rat employer, promised and didnt follow through on it. Millwright is ok too, not all of them are out in mills and plants. Once you get red seal can go your own way and leave a bad situation whenever you want. Electricains with red seal are hard to find , my employer has gone years trying to get at least 2 steady.

Do you know what HVAC or elevator is like out there? Feel like those two fields would be always in sever demand.

Try to get your Safeway union to get you apply into to one of the trade schools and maybe you can get a full ride apprenticeship while working .
Lots of trades out the not just carpenter ( sometimes seasonal or just slow ) or plumbing ( great pay but lots of shady employers. )

HVAC or refrigeration mechanics are always in demand.
Refrigeration Operators are another job in demand as all municipalities have ice rinks of some kind and any place with a refrigeration unit is always looking for them.

Sometimes you can get an assist via a B.A chatting to another B.A if the unions are allied and not at loggerheads due to raiding etc. Most help each other out as they have non-compete clauses

If you are unemployed or underemployed, I would make an appointment at your local WorkBC office and see if they will fund you for pre-apprenticeship training.
This would give you 1st year of apprenticeship, and open up many doors for you.
They usually pay for the schooling, provide you with an income, possibly pay for some other expenses as well.
I would try explore that avenue...i have and found work as a result of the training I have taken

Also you can use the EI option as they extend benefits when in a program . I know E.I. is a dirty word to some but you pay it all your life so your entitled. Getting in a trades program with them could, as with being a mature student, fast track you in a progam. At your age your not old to start a trade, seen millwrights working until 66 or 67

I left the lower mainland 10 years ago. I make a lot less money but my quality of life has tripled.

We are in Upper Eagle Ridge in Coquitlam & cashing in hopefully this Summer or next Spring at the latest. Going to look around at Blind Bay & Kamloops & areas nearby. Doing a looky loo troop anytime now & then book some viewings. Back in town now so on a hurry up schedule prepping the house.

A lot of the trades are like that. I remember one of our electricians retiring and odd jobbing for a lot of years after. Even was brought back as a consultant during a period of modernisation as the new electricians and engineers couldnt figure out how the place was wired

North Van on top of that commute , ugly . If able to take the south perimeter at least you had a chance to get past the mess. But all i hear in traffic on the way home is North Van blocked here, there, everywhere.

- Tigersmyle

Lived in North Vancouver for 43yrs & most ppl overstate to say the least what traffic is like. Depends on work hours & counterflow is easy. 40mins from Coquitlam Ctr to Caulfield at best.

I’ll be seeing you when the LNG goes lol
It will be my last big job before semi-retirement away from the city.

Pretty much anywhere is a parking lot now anyhow. I have had to take my wife at times to Vancouver and she cant figure out the routes i take home to avoid the snarl. ( i do a lot of back alley manouvering )

Kitimat cannot attract trades ppl easily.
They want temporary journeypersons without any enticements is why. Millwrights are in high demand & none will apply.

Should be a 3-5 year job for you pipefitters. Going to be a good gig for closing out a career.
