Not to be a smartass, actually that was the point, Lehtera and Wiese will not be bought out because of future cap ramifications. I believe that the team made an announcement already that Mrazek's option would not be exercised. The bottom line is that Hextall is gearing up for a Simmonds extension, salary increases for the kids, and protecting cap space for emergencies or deadline deals. That is why I think Filpulla will be back on the cheap.

Unless it’s disinformation, Hextall has states he wants to add a very good player via trade or FA.

That said, he may consider Filp to be a very good player.

Any idea of how much that cost them in terms of cap hit and years?

I understand that he doesn't want to burn any bridges, but unlike the case with Manning, Hextall did not rule out bringing Filpulla back. I really would like to see Cole signed but I don't think that will happen. I like Stastny but I think his age combined the contract term he will seek will be prohibitive.

I think there is very little chance Flip is brought back.

That’s not bad. As for FA, Hexy stated he wants an upgrade on O and D. We all know Goalie is also a concern. He has his work cut out for him this summer.

The Flyers have a lot of cap space and that has me wondering if they'd bring back Filppula to be the 4C and sign a 3C as well.

I see Filppula only as a last resort.

I could see interest in Roussel, solid winger that can kill penalties and play with and edge. Also could see a 3rd line center in guys like Stastny and Nash.

Can't rule out a trade and bringing in someone with a higher cap hit.

I tend to agree. I fear the following dominoes...

1.) Filpulla is signed to a favorable one year deal in the lull of free agency after Hextall, correctly, watches other FAs sign with other teams to massive deals.

2.) At camp/preseason, Filpulla is given the typical veteran leeway by Hakstol (and most other NHL coaches to be fair).

3.) Your starting 3C for opening night is Val Filpulla. Perhaps as 4C depending on the play of Laughton. I expect them to be interchangeable.

yup. No way Hextall gives bozak some ridiculous 4x5 deal or really signs any of the "intriguing" free agents in their 30s to the 5 yr deals they'll inevitably want. I'll be shocked. This isn't critical of hextall at all. Go after Grabner imo, then that's about where my list ends. I don't trust Riley Nash and half of his points coming on the Bruins' top line.

The 3 and 4C spots will be a fight between Vecchione, Vorboyev, Laughton, and Filppula.

I would be interested in signing him depending on the term. If they can fill the 3C spot with a Statsny/Bozak/Nash type player or even make a trade for someone, a 3rd line of Grabner, one of the guys mentioned above and Simmonds would be really good.

Absolutely correct. Although technically its not the upcoming year, our big FA add will be Simmonds for 5 yrs. at 6.5m per annum.

Maybe, maybe not. But on those terms a healthy Simmonds is a great add through his age 34 season.

I personally hope Hextall is fibbing with his Simmonds extension comments. You know, a little tactic to build his value up or make teams think they can’t have him since we intend to sign him. Let a team change his mind.
