Well, that 7th overall is tempting to put it with Eichel, Dahlin, Mitts, Sam (maybe), Risto. Also, if you get the 7th maybe you can move up to the 4th or 5th without giving away the farm.

It probably will be a good player. Or not. Or the pick could miss. The earliest we would see returns is 2021-22. My God, let's try to be good this year

Montreal needs a proven #1/#2 centre much more than the Sabres need to trade ROR to a divisional rival. And once JT resigns with the Islanders, ROR becomes the #1 available center in the entire NHL. If I am Botts, the only way I trade with Montreal is if they give up #3 overall. Or maybe for Drouin+. Is it a steep and ridiculous price for Montreal to pay - yes. But remember, Botts is in the driver's seat, not Bergevin. If Montreal doesn't step up, Botts can trade him to the Canucks, Blues, Vegas or somebody else looking for a top 6 center.

For reference, look at Montreal's centre depth chart. Brutal.

With all due respect, they likely won't be good next season...better yes, good not so much.
I would rather build a solid foundation that lasts many, many years than try to be a bubble team this year.
We will still see growth from much of the lineup and that will be fun for me...as long as the guys are in fact showing consistent signs of growth, development towards being an exciting playoff team for the 2019-2020 season, I'll be good.

I can't wait till the "acquiring picks and prospects" talk turns into "who do we have to trade because of cap issues after winning the cup"

Sure, i would hate to see ROR traded for a pick in 2020, though. If someone wants him, they should pony up some young, established wing talent and prospects. I think the organization owes it to Eichel and the fans to ice the most competitive roster possible in 2018-19.

I don't disagree at all...but I'm ok getting a high draft pic and solid young A prospecy(s) for him rather than an overaged, expensive player.

When GMTM traded all the young talent...I hated it since I felt we got screwed being g able to watch them grow up and together...very much looking forward to that happening with the future roster!!

It seems after the Kane trade, GMs think they can low ball GMJB. I hope GMJB holds out, we don't need to trade ROR, screw them if they think they're getting him for garbage parts.
- sskkoo1

You're trading two wildly different assets here. If there's no market, there's no market. I felt we could have done better, but I think we ended up ok.

But there's a market for top 6 centers, for sure. And the Canucks aren't the only ones looking.

If we're talking Pacioretty, sure. If we're talking Schwartz, Stone, one or more of the Rangers guys, etc., would prefer it to a draft pick.

Everything I'm hearing would make me very ok with keeping him

What is really garbage is the NHL putting new penalties on contracts after they were signed and structured and approved by the NHL. If the NHL did not do that Hossa would be retired.

Side note - Hossa's Cap hit is $5.275 mil. But his actually salary is only $1mil per year for the next 3 years. As someone so astutely point out Buffalo can put him on LTIR on day 1 of the season each year and use the cap space for in season signings and trades.

- -Doh-

A few posts here have been way off on LTIR. Buffalo wants absolutely nothing to do with Hossa. The capfriendly FAQ has great info on this.

-Players on LTIR do still count against the cap.
-LTIR provides an additional relief pool
-The relief formula is very complicated, and you need to be over the cap to take advantage of it.
-It's not something you can effectively bank for in season moves

There's simply no reason for Buffalo to want this headache. If LTIR were as simple as commonly believed, there's be no reason for Chicago to even care about moving the deal in the first place.

Well, to be honest, I think most of these hockey analysts and what not have their head up their butt, and GMs pass along miss information, so it is probably closer to complete fabrication than the truth.IMO.

And unless it is a haul, I'm fine with keeping ROR...it isn't like he sucks.
